The Asians of Harry Potter

As most of you know, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hollows Part 2 is coming out to theaters July 15th. Many, including myself are going to the midnight premiere tonight. Whether you’re going to see it in IMAX, 3D, 2D, or whatever, the latest and final movie in the Harry Potter series is sure to be epic. (And if you haven’t entered our Harry Potter swag contest, you should go there now! It’s almost over).

But let’s talk about the ASIANS that are in Harry Potter. Yes. There are some Asians in Harry Potter. J.K. Rowling graciously wrote in a couple Asian roles. The biggest of these roles is probably Cho Chang, played by Chinese-Scottish actress Katie Leung, and Harry’s former love interest.

Even though she might not be Harry’s girl for the long run, Cho was quite significant in past movies as Harry’s first adolescent love.

Furthermore, Parvati Patil and Padma Patil were both played by Indian girls. Padma is played by Afshan Azad and Parvati by Shefali Chowdhury.

So there are a few Asians repping in the Harry Potter series! Sure it’s not that many, but at the same time it’s not the director or casting directors’ fault. J.K. Rowling just didn’t write in that many Asians in the book series (Ms. Rowling, could you add a couple more in your next series based on Harry’s son). I’m just glad that the casting directors didn’t just go ahead and cast white actors in these roles (*cough* Avatar *cough*).

What if Harry Potter was Asian and named Harry Lee instead? Haha, that’s something to think about. The series is already HUGE in Asia. Add in an Asian main character and you probably have the most profitable movie series in the world! (Or it might be terrible because Harry is Harry and to change him would be a travesty).

And to end our editorial, here’s a trailer of the last movie. Watch it tonight!
