The Legends Football League was renamed in early 2013 after it was decided the old Lingerie Football League needed a change to gain credibility as a true sport. Rather than just a gimmick with scantily-clad gridiron girls, the Legends Football League has been ever-growing since the change. It began in 2009 with 10 US teams, but now the LFL now has leagues in Canada and Australia, with plans to expand even further. LFL leagues in Europe, South America, and, yes, Asia are coming soon.

After a reported successful publicity tour of China and Japan, LFL officials are planning on kicking off LFL Asia shortly after it’s European and Latin American leagues are established, both of which are slated for 2015.

This 2009 official team photo of GN Kang, shows how the Lingerie Football League’s uniforms were a little more frilly, but no more or less revealing, than the current uniforms worn today.

Throughout its span, only a handful of Asian ladies have played in the LFL, even when the league was starting out and the play and competitiveness was arguably a bit less intense than it is today. Among the alumnae is former Philadelphia “Wired 96.5” radio personality GN Kang, who played center for the now-defunct Philadelphia Passion during the LFL’s inaugural year. Said Kang, regarding the LFL “uniforms,” during an October 2009 interview; “You understand that there could be some mishaps, there could be something exposed, but in the end, I think we’re running or catching or throwing as if we’re in regular clothes.”

Mary Anne Hanson

Former BC Angels quarterback, Mary-Anne Hanson now calls signals for the Seattle Mist.

Although not part of any team’s game plan, wardrobe malfunctions (like fumbles) on the field do happen. In fact, often enough to make LFL officials feel it was necessary to put an “accidental nudity” clause in players’ contracts.
