Why Sucker Punch is Important for Asian Americans

Sucker Punch, a new movie coming out on March 25th, will be an important day for Asian Americans. That is because Sucker Punch is one of the most high profile Hollywood movies in recent times that is packed with Asian talent, both in front and behind the screen (and it also features my favorite Italian woman after Snooki, Carla Gugino, but I digress).

Watching the ridiculously awesome trailer just sends chills down my spine. I don’t think we’ve seen a film this visual and stylized since maybe Watchmen (also by Zack Snyder). I dig this director, a lot, and I know Sucker Punch will not disappoint.

But let’s get into the Asian talent in this film.

Sucker Punch features Vanessa Anne Hudgens of High School musical fame. While you may not be able to tell, Vanessa is Chinese-Filipina. She will be playing the role of Blondie (left), one of the inmates of in a female asylum who is ironically a brunette.

Secondly, we have the lovely Jamie Chung, who got her start in reality television. While some may think that a start in reality television would hamper your chances at having a career in film, she took her popularity from The Real World and turned it into movie roles. You may have seen her in Dragonball (ugh, Goku was white… I know), Sorority Row, and Grownups.

Besides the onscreen Asian beauties, Sucker Punch actually also features a lot of talent behind the scenes. Steve Shibuya, a Japanese screenwriter, worked on the screenplay, along with Zack Snyder, Larry Fong was the cinematographer, and William Hoy was the editor. Evidently, the film has a great number of Asian influences, and I have to think that the screenwriter was partially responsible for that.

Whether or not this movie is successful doesn’t matter. This was a big step for Asians in the film industry either way. Let’s hope that it does become a hit. Join the Sucker Punch facebook page at http://www.facebook.com/SPJourney.
