The Red Shoes Review
The movie is based off a fairy tale by Hans Christian Andersen. A horrible fate awaits whoever picks up a pair of cursed pink shoes. After leaving her husband, Sun Jae moves to an old apartment with her daughter. She finds the pink shoes on the subway and takes them home, entranced by their majestic beauty. However, unfortunate events start to surround her after she picks them up, and she enlists the help of an architect to help her solve the mystery behind the shoes.

The Red Shoes was an interesting film that captivated me from the start. The director was very adept at creating a creepy world full of creepy personalities. I attribute a lot of the atmosphere to the art direction on the film. The colors of the movie were very dull except for parts where the shoes took center stage. This allowed for the film to really highlight the majestic quality of the enchanted pink shoes while also increasing the movie's creep factor.

The movie was genuinely pretty scary thanks to the director's ability to use the scary music, blend it with scary settings, and slowly build the suspense. I especially liked the opening scene where we see a preview of what happens to women who pick up the shoes. There was also a little bit of a Ringu/Ju-On imitation when we see a dead woman with creepy long black hair covering her face. A little clichéd possibly, but still scary nonetheless.

The plot was decent, but not the strong point of the film. I didn't understand some parts of the movie including the twist ending (which seemed to be full of plot holes). Perhaps a second viewing would help me understand the film better. Overall the movie won't be something that you can fully understand in a single sitting because the plot feels too convoluted. There are flashbacks, dream sequences, and surreal moments in the film that will probably confuse the casual watcher.

If you like horror movies, you should check out The Red Shoes.
