The Machine Girl Review
After one Japanese school girl's life is turned upside down due to the death of her brother, she decides to get revenge in any means possible. This includes killing each of her brother's tormenters, which includes a Yakuza family. While trying to kill the Yakuza boss's son, she is captured and tortured. The family severs her arm, however, she is able to escape. She gains the help of a woman named Miki and her husband. Their son was also killed by the same Yakuza family. They replace her arm with a Gatling gun and together, they go to seek their revenge.
Machine Girl is a prime example of a Japanese exploitation movie. It has a cute idol posing as a school girl, buckets of gore, Yakuza, and a ridiculous storyline. It's obvious this movie isn't getting any Oscars, but the film does succeed in what it was meant to do, namely to shock and awe the audience. Personally I haven't seen a film that made me want to puke while simultaneously making me laugh. The director really went all out on this one.
The storyline doesn't even attempt to be logical. Obviously the director didn't intend for the film to be realistic in any aspect whatsoever. The crazy scenes where ninjas deflect machine gun fire with a katana or where blood gushes from open wounds like geysers were so outlandish that they were entertaining. The more extreme scenes, however, are unbearable to watch and may cause some to feel the need to vomit. These vomit-inducing scenes were a dime a dozen in this film, so be careful before you decide to go out and rent this to watch with your girlfriend. If you do like to watch people eat their own fingers as sushi, then this movie is for you. It was clearly intended for this movie not to be taken seriously.
Minase Yashiro, who plays the main character Ami, actually was surprisingly decent in her role. True the role required no real "acting," but she seemed pretty good for the role. I also wonder what made her take a role in such a gore-fest when she's such a cute-looking little girl. The Yakuza boss, portrayed by Heihachi Mishima of the game Tekken, was probably the highlight of the film. His serious face and seriously bad haircut made him probably the funniest character of the film. Oh, his wife is pretty funny too. Played by AV actress, Honoka, she steals the show at the end with her "drill bra." You'll have to watch it to know what I mean.
Overall
Machine Girl is a movie worth watching if you're up for it. I actually would recommend it for whoever can stand A LOT of gore and wants to watch a cute Japanese idol slaughter a whole Yakuza family with a machine gun for her arm.
