The Legend of Drunken Master Review
Legend of Drunken Master, also known as
Drunken Master II, is the sequel to the original
Drunken Master. The movie tells the exploits of drunken boxing master Wong Fei Hung. A Chinese ambassador has been smuggling ancient Chinese artifacts out of China. Fei Hung accidentally comes into possession of one of these artifacts after mistaking the package for a package of ginseng that he is bringing home. The ambassador sends out a team to retrieve the artifact and is able to steal it back while luring Fei Hung into a trap.
I'm a huge Jackie Chan fan so I'm a little biased writing this review. I absolutely loved the movie. It had all the elements of a great Chan flick and had a storyline that didn't suck like some of his American films. It's simple action plus humor, and Chan delivers his finest in this one.
I think what really made this movie great was its humor. Chan plays Wong Fei Hong, a kung fu master who gets power from being drunk. It was hilarious watching his drunken antics while defeating mobs of bad guys. He also has quite a few funny supporting cast members. His mother, played by Anita Mui, was great in her role, providing a lot of comedic relief. Even though Chan excels at the comedic aspects of his role, there were some dramatic and emotional parts that Chan also performed flawlessly.
Besides the humor of the movie,
Legend of Drunken Master features some great action scenes directed by legendary action choreographer Yuen Woo-Ping. In particular I liked the scene where Wong Fei Hong has to fight off a horde of axe-wielding bandits. Although the situation of the fight was absurd, the director manages to make it somewhat realistic. There were also a couple of other great fights showing off some spectacular kung fu. Like with most Chan movies, the film ends with a sort of boss fight that was top notch. This last fight is one of the best fights you will ever see in a martial arts movie. Chan actually falls into a pile of burning hot coals. Where in Hollywood can you find an actor with that kind of dedication to his art?
For action movie fans,
The Legend of Drunken Master is a must-watch. Being a huge fan of Chan, I can also safely say that this is one of his best works. I highly recommend you get your hands on this one.
