Windstruck Review
Windstruck was directed by the director of My Sassy Girl, and there are many similarities between these two movies. Jun Ji-Hyun plays the brash, loud-mouthed female cop, similar to her role in My Sassy Girl. Jang Hyuk plays Myungwoo, a high school teacher. Myungwoo is in pursuit of a purse snatcher when the cop (Jun Ji-Hyun's character), mistakes him for the culprit. She tackles him and takes him to the police station, where the misunderstanding is sorted out. Later, these two are assigned to work together to catch delinquent students, and Ji-Hyun's character falls in love with Myungwoo.
When compared to My Sassy Girl, Windstruck is a bit more heartbreaking. Even so, this movie isn't really a tearjerker, and there are plenty of funny moments throughout the movie. The plot has so many similarities to My Sassy Girl that it's almost a spin-off, but not quite. It's quite hard to describe much about this film without giving away any spoilers. A major event happens in the middle that completely changes the movie, and I was left wondering how it could happen only about halfway through the film. Still, the ending was satisfying despite the painful events that happened throughout the movie.
Littered throughout the movie are some bits of comedy. Jang Hyuk is quite funny is many of his scenes, mostly because he has a goofy sort of smile and has a silly personality. Jun Ji-Hyun's tough-girl antics are also funny because she can take advantage of Gyeon-woo so easily. However, this movie still isn't as funny as My Sassy Girl.
The characters, again, are similar in nature to My Sassy Girl. Jang Hyuk's character is a pure-hearted, nice guy, similar to Cha Tae-Hyun's Gyeon-woo character. Jun Ji-Hyun again plays her stereotypical tough-girl role. Even though the movie tries to make the audience cry, one of the main reasons that it doesn't succeed is that the characters aren't developed well enough to make you care for them.
For fans of My Sassy Girl, it might be worth your time to watch Windstruck, but to anyone who hasn't seen My Sassy Girl, it might be best to watch that movie first. This movie has a bigger impact after watching My Sassy Girl, but it's also a decent movie on its own. The main problem was that this movie attempted to be a sadder, more dramatic version of My Sassy Girl, but it falls short.
