Time Shi Gan Review
What do you do when you think your boyfriend is tired of you? For Seh-hee, the only way to make her man love her again is plastic surgery. However, she doesn't get bigger breasts or a prettier face, but instead she completely alters herself to look like a different person. Without telling her boyfriend Ji-woo, she disappears for six months while her new face heals. Meanwhile Ji-woo is pining away as he tries to accept the fact that his girlfriend left him. One day he meets Seh-hee again, however, he can't recognize her because of her new identity as See-hee, the new waitress at a local cafe. They fall in love but See-hee is again having doubts about herself, and Ji-woo still has a lingering love of the old Seh-hee.

Time is a bizarre film that is wholly unrealistic yet it does have some merits. The premise was the reason I wanted to watch this film, but after completing it I wasn't wowed. This movie presented a fascinating concept, but unfortunately the plot felt too surreal and also somewhat boring. The ending didn't make any logical sense, and I was dissapointed at how the movie ended with so many questions unanswered. Some may like this type of ending because it is quite open to interpretation, which is what I think the director wanted.

Korea is known for its plastic beauties, and this movie attempts to address this issue negatively. It's obvious that there is some underlying message about plastic surgery not being the answer to a person's problems, but ironically, Seh-hee looks better post-surgery. The two actresses playing the before and after Seh-hee's looked very similar, and I would have mistaken them for the same actress if I hadn't known better. Why the main male lead can't make this connection is uncertain, and throughout the whole movie, Ji-woo doesn't realize that See-hee is actually Seh-hee.

The actress for Seh-hee is only involved for about twenty minutes before she is completely replaced by a new actress for the rest of the film. Sung Hyun-ah, the actress for See-hee plays her part well for what she is supposed to do; she displays a great variety of emotions and personalities, but I blame the director for making this character too extreme both before and after the surgery. If anything, I will say that the personalities of Seh-hee and See-hee were very similar which helped make this movie a bit more realistic. Ji-woo is a little one-dimensional, but his character is more believable than Seh-hee. The actor for Ji-woo was decent, but he wasn't extremely convincing since he didn't really show much emotion. Because of this, some of his actions felt unreal for the situation. For example, he doesn't seem that sad about losing his girlfriend initially, yet he goes to extreme measures to be with her again.

What this movie really needs is some drama. While watching the movie, I didn't really find the problems to be interesting, and as a result the drama didn't create enough excitement. There were too many unnecessary events, such as random hook-ups by Ji-woo after his girlfriend disappeared, that didn't really seem to affect the plot at all. The only reason I was able to finish the movie was because I was interested in the final outcome of the movie, which didn't really answer any of the questions that the movie presented.

This movie has a great concept that was hindered by poor direction. The movie was also too bizarre to the point that it was confusing, which may disappoint viewers. Still the movie may appeal to some audiences who are looking for a psychologically intriguing film that is very open to interpretation.
