Time Between Dog and Wolf Review
As a twelve year old boy, Lee Soo Hyun fell in love with a girl named Suh Ji Woo whom he met while he was living with his mother in Thailand. One uneventful day, Soo Hyun's mother was killed by a member of a drug faction. The member is also revealed to be Suh Ji Woo's biological father. Due to problems with Suh Ji Woo's biological father, Suh Ji Woo and her mother escaped to Korea with Ji Woo's uncle. Lee Soo Hyun was adopted by Kang Min Ki's parents after his mother's murder. Kang Min Ki's father led the two boys down a path to becoming agents in the National Intelligence Service or NIS. Coincidentally, Soo Hyun meets Suh Ji Woo in Korea and falls in love with her, but Kang Min Ki also has his eyes on Suh Ji Woo.
While on a mission, Lee Soo Hyun recognizes the man who killed his mother. Soo Hyun let his personal vendetta against the man cloud his judgment and he broke procedure in order to kill the man. NIS decided to strip him of his uniform. In despair, Soo Hyun took a secret mission to destroy Ching faction in order to get his revenge.
Lee Jun Ki finally gets his first starring role in a Korean drama, and I have to say that he doesn't disappoint in
Time Between Dog and Wolf. Jun Ki really impressed me with his acting in this drama. One can see how much Lee Jun Ki has matured in his acting skills. The new haircut also gives him more of an edgy feel instead of his usual feminine look.
The other main male character, played by Jung Kyung Ho, is not as impressive. Sometimes I felt as if his character was very exaggerated or fake. The other supporting characters were excellent. I especially liked Nam Sang Mi's character and the crime boss, Ma Wo.
Although it started off slowly, the story became exciting and very suspenseful. Usually having a slow start would kill off a drama, but it wasn't true for this one. I was completely hooked after the second episode. The rest of the series was completely action-packed. The story is very twisted and has plenty of little quirks that increase the excitement without falling into the same clichés that are present in other dramas. Sure, Lee Jun Ki does lose his memory, a plot device used in quite a number of Korean productions, but besides that, the storyline was very unique and quite different from the normal Korean drama.
The ending is somewhat controversial for some people. I know people who loved the ending, like myself, and people who hated the ending. It is not a conventional happy ending, but there is closure to the storyline. I was very satisfied with the ending, but I am aware that the conclusion might piss some people off.
Overall I would say that
Time Between Dog is a drama you should see. Fans of action dramas should definitely get a copy of this drama pronto since it is one of the best action dramas that I have seen yet. Try a few episodes and gauge for yourself whether it is worth your time. The series won't appeal to everyone, but I think it has a unique appeal that will please many Korean drama enthusiasts.
