The Twins Effect Review
Reeve is a vampire hunter who just lost his partner, Lila, while fighting against a powerful vampire named Duke. Although reluctant to have a new partner, he gets paired up with another female vampire hunter named Gypsy. Meanwhile, Reeve’s sister, Helen starts to fall in love with a Vampire prince named Kazaf, whom she met at a restaurant. Kazaf is one of the few vampires that is peaceful and gentle. Duke, the powerful vampire at the beginning of the film, wants to steal the blood from the five vampire princes, including Kazaf, which will help him unlock a book that will grant him near invincibility. Reeve is captured by Duke, and it is up to Kazaf, Gypsy, and Helen to save him and the entire world from this evil vampire.

This movie was quite surprising because it was completely different than what I would expect from two pop singers. Chinese vampires, wow… that’s different. The storyline was fresh, interesting, and didn’t contain many Hong Kong movie clichés, but it had a more Hollywood style feel. Instead of real martial arts, the movie was chock full of special effects. For being pop singers without any martial arts background, I thought the Twins did a fairly good job of fighting, but don’t expect to see the amazing choreography of a Donnie Yen or Jackie Chan film.

I would have liked to see a bit more action in this movie. Unlike other Hong Kong martial arts films, Twins Effect didn’t create fast-paced action that thoroughly adrenalizes the audience. The fighting scenes between the Twins weren’t that realistic and employed mostly CGI and camera effects to create the illusion of action. The Twins didn’t do a terrible job of fighting, on the contrary, they seemed decent at fighting, but the action wasn’t grand enough to create a lasting impression.

The characters were quite interesting and had very distinct personalities. Edison Chen was believable in his role as a gentle vampire, although he should have been given some better action scenes. Gillian Chung and Charlene Choi played personalities that were somewhat contrasting at the beginning, and it was interesting to see their interaction. Yet even though the title of the movie implies that the film is all about the Twins, the roles were pretty evenly split between all the characters. Reeve, the main vampire hunter, had a very limited role, although he is supposedly one of the main characters. His character lacked good character development, and is basically stereotyped as the “protective mentor.” His love storyline with Gillian Chung’s character also didn’t really get a chance to develop. The main antagonist, Duke, was too weak in this movie. He wasn’t made into a real badass, and had very limited screen time. He also didn’t really fight, but he used his magical “vampire powers” and “magic gauntlet” to defeat his foes.

It’s a decent movie, but not the best. There’s also a pretty funny scene in Twins Effect which features Jackie Chan. For a Hong Kong film, Twins Effect is on the lower end of the spectrum in terms of action, but the movie makes up for it with a one-of-a-kind storyline and cool special effects. Gillian Chung is also real eye candy, so if you’re a fan of the Twins or Jackie Chan, it may be worth your time to watch this movie.
