Summer Scent Review
After losing his fiancé in a car accident on his wedding day, Yoo Min-woo escapes to Europe to forget the pain of losing his beloved. Upon returning to Korea, Min-woo goes hiking where he meets Shim Hye-won, a florist who is expanding her portfolio of exotic flowers. Although their meeting wasn’t very pleasant at first, it was almost like fate had brought them together. Not only does Hye-won remind Min-woo of his deceased fiancé, but whenever he is around, Hye-won’s heart begins to pound faster and faster. This may be a sign of romance however, Hye-won is already in a relationship, and Min-woo has an admirer who won’t let go. With a series of coincidental meetings, revelations concerning a heart transplant, and wavering emotions between characters, Min-woo and Hye-won’s relationship gives you a Scent of Summer, beautiful and stirring.
A woman who receives a heart transplant which later causes her to exhibit the emotions of the previous owner sure sounds like an interesting story, doesn’t it? Well, at first, it was a great story, but as the story progressed, all the misunderstandings and hesitations started to get irritating. The relationship between Min-woo and Hye-won went back and forth in circles with denial and betrayal between characters, making the story a bit exhausting. Nevertheless, the story wasn’t bad. Just the idea that the emotions inside one heart could bring two people together was really something different. It kind of seemed unrealistic that someone’s emotions could be transplanted into another, but in this story, it doesn’t seem impossible. Truthfully, there’s nothing but drama in this series consisting of a lot of fighting, misunderstandings, and crying. Sure there was
some romance, but mostly, it was just a lot of drama.
The two main characters in this series, Hye-won (Son Ye Jin) and Min-woo (Song Seung Hun) were really suited for each other. Their personalities were so innocent and pure that it was hard not to love seeing them together. Hye-won is that cute little flower girl who just brightens everything when she smiles. Min-woo is the charming guy who is trying to get over his past. The two characters show a change as the series continues. Most of the happiness in the beginning becomes depression because of tension and confusion as more history and events are revealed, but then all of that becomes, well, I won’t spoil that. Park Jung-jae (Ryu Jin) is Hye-won’s boyfriend. He’s a businessman whose family has taken care of Hye-won ever since her parents died. His character is very possessive and arrogant at times when it comes to Hye-won for fear he might lose her. Park Jung-ah (Han Ji Hye) is Jung-jae’s sister who is also Min-woo’s admirer (or stalker…). Her presence wreaks havoc everywhere and her words and actions make you hate her. Because of her infatuation with Min-woo, Jung-ah is quick to draw conclusions whenever she sees Hye-won with him. For that reason, there is constant suspicion and unease between characters. The other two characters that are supports for the two leads are Oh Jang-mi (Jo Eun Sook) and Ji Dae-poong (Ahn Jung Hoon). The two lighten the mood when the atmosphere is tense which (in my opinion) keeps the story going.
Summer Scent was twenty episodes long, which was really too long for this series, and it could have been much improved had the series been more concise. For a couple of episodes, nothing really happened, which made it very boring to sit through. Easily this series could have been shortened to about fourteen episodes, and the fact that it felt too drawn out and slow really lessened its value.
Overall, I wouldn’t recommend this series to many people. The beginning was great. It got me hooked, but after ten episodes or so, I lost interest. The story began to drag on longer than I anticipated. When it was done, I kind of celebrated, but I was extremely unsatisfied with the ending. I’d probably recommend this drama to people who really like the actors and actresses in it, other wise I’d skip over it. I’d also recommend it to people who’ve watched Yoon Seok Ho’s other dramas (Autumn Tales, Winter Sonata, and Spring Waltz) just to say that you’ve completed all the seasons. In comparison to the other dramas with the seasonal themes, this one is one of the worst.
