Shanghai Knights Review
Jackie Chan and Owen Wilson reunite for Shanghai Knights, the sequel to the hit movie, Shanghai Noon. Chan plays Chon Wang, who has since become the sheriff in Nevada since Shanghai Noon. Owen reprises his role as Roy O' Bannon. When Chon Wang learns from his sister that their father was murdered, and the Emperor's Imperial seal was stolen, Chon has to meet up with his sister and Roy to catch the bad guys and regain the Imperial seal.
Jackie stars in another East meets West film. If you've watched the first in the Shanghai series, you'll be familiar with the style that this film is presented in. It's a light-hearted, very comedic movie that still has plenty of action, but mostly, this is a film that you watch for Jackie's talents as a comedian.
Among Jackie's American co-stars, I find Owen Wilson to be the best. Owen is funny on his own, but add Jackie's antics, some awesome fights, and a new hot Asian babe, and you've got the recipe for a successful movie. The three main roles, Chon Wang, Roy, and Lin, had very contrasting personalities, which really made their on-screen chemistry fun. Jackie played the somewhat clueless, yet caring and serious guy, while Roy played the outgoing, crazy, funny, and extremely womanizing western boy. Fann Wong was also good in her role as Jackie's sister, and she was also very beautiful in this film.
Shanghai Knights can be compared more to an Indiana Jones film than most of Chan's previous films. It's set in older times, and there is more of an adventure aspect to the movie. As usual, Chan uses many different and unique everyday items as weapons in his fight scenes.
Among Jackie Chan films, I have to say that Shanghai Knights is a must-watch. It is one of Jackie's last good movies; he's an aging star that is about to make way for younger, and better martial arts actors. Knights is funnier than most of Jackie's movies, and the fact that Owen Wilson, one of my favorite comedians, is Jackie's co-star should be reason enough to warrant a watch.
