Sex is Zero Review
Eun Sik, 28, has recently started school at a local university with his friends. He attends a martial art endurance type training program and practices with them almost on a daily bases. During practice he meets a gorgeous girl, Eun Hyo, who is obviously out of his league, and soon this develops into a one-sided attraction. Eun Sik and his friends are a few extremely perverted horny porn driven teens with only one thing on their minds, sex. Unfortunately they've never gotten any. Eun Sik is often seen by Eun Hyo in extremely awkward and embarrassing situations that are too grossly inappropriate to be described. But through all of this, he and his insanely horny group of friends help make this sex comedy memorable, complete with hilarious, outrageously disgusting, and somewhat dramatic moments. This movie is not recommended to watch with your girlfriend, or on a date, as some parts in the film are incredibly awkward and profane.
The magic to Sex is Zero lies within its characters. The guys are hilarious and likable, but at times they let their raging hormones take control of themselves. On the other hand, the girls in the movie seem virtually heartless through many moments, especially the lead girl Eun Hyo. However she cleans up her act near the end of the film after a terrible dramatic incident shakes up her life.
It's hard not to feel bad for Eun Sik, but at times he is so stupid that you just want to kill him. Yet he somehow manages to win Eun Hyo's heart over in the end even through all the embarrassing moments that have happened between the two. The ending of the film disappointed me, because it was quick and lacked substance. I felt as if the director just put the ending together quickly to satisfy audiences.
Overall, this film is not like the traditional Korean films, and actually it's quite similar to American movies like American Pie and 40-Year-Old-Virgin. The movie isn't very deep, nor is it a tearjerker; it's just a shallow, somewhat amusing film that is packed with crude humor and sexual situations. The title, Sex is Zero, suggests that the film is just about sex, and while this isn't entirely true, you'll find that most of the content in this movie is sexually-based, including scenes of masturbation, intercourse, sex dolls, etc. Aside from the many explicit sex scenes,
The film falls flat in a few areas and has a hard time getting picked up. The dramatic section is a bit odd, and the finale is a tad cliched. The choice of music in the film is very 80s, like a throwback to 16 Candles or other classic comedies. I would recommend this film to people who just want a few good laughs. It's really nothing special but its an appropriate movie to watch after you've just been dumped by your girlfriend.
