Queen of Housewives Review
In High School, Chun Ji Ae was an absolute star. She was popular, pretty, and good with boys. Her friend since elementary school, Yang Bong Soon, on the other hand, is ugly and unpopular. Although they proclaim to be friends, Ji Ae only hangs out with Bong Soon to boss her around and look prettier to everyone else and Bong Soon only endures the harassment so she can feel as if she's popular as well. When Ji Ae steals the only guy that ever liked Bong Soon, Yang Bong Soon ends the friendship and erupts. She decides that she will get her revenge one day.
Fast forward several years later and the tables have turned. While Chun Ji Ae did marry a promising medical student named Ohn Dal Soo who graduated from Seoul University, it is Yang Bong Soon's husband that holds a top position at Queen Foods, one of the largest companies in Korea. Chun Ji Ae's husband, although intelligent, lacks the social skills to climb the corporate ladder and succeed. He goes from job to job and usually remains unemployed. Due to his inability to hold a job, their family's financial situation is terrible.
One day Dal Soo applies for a position at Queen Foods. The housewives of the employees have their own little group. Although the wives don't directly work for the company, most of the husbands' promotions are tied in with his wife's status in the group. Whoever can impress the head lady of this group, a woman named Jang Young Sook, can help her husband win a promotion. To help Dal Soo get a job at this company, Chun Ji Ae decides to try and win the heart of Jang Young Sook.
Things become complicated when Ji Ae realizes that one of the people in charge of new recruits is actually her former lover, Han Joon Hyuk, whose wife is none other than Ji Ae's former childhood friend Yang Bong Soon. Although plastic surgery has melted away her ugliness, she still has the same heart to punish Ji Ae through any means possible. Also suddenly it seems the CEO's beautiful wife has been taking an interest to her husband, Ohn Dal Soo.
I didn't have high expectations for this drama when I watched the first episodes, but after about episode six the drama really became one of my favorites. The reason I totally loved it was because there were so many moments that made me laugh out loud. The drama was mostly light until the end which made it fun for me to watch.
One reason I really enjoyed this drama was the actors. Although some of the acting was farfetched, especially when the housewives suck up to a wife with a higher position, the actors are what made this drama what it is.
My favorite actors for this drama were Oh Ji Ho who portrayed Ohn Dal Soo and Yoon Sang Hyun who portrayed Heo Tae Joon. I became a fan of Oh Ji Ho after watching
Fantasy Couple and I thought his role in this drama was excellent again. His character is pure hearted and loving, but also a little bit too nice. The CEO's wife starts to fall for him because he showed her so much kindness. I may just be a sucker for beautiful women, but I thought the CEO's wife was perfect for Ohn Dal Soo.
Yoon Sang Hyun's portrayal of Heo Tae Joon, the playboy CEO of Queens Food, was excellent. He was one of the funnier characters of the drama. Although his personality isn't great at the beginning, he really matures at the drama's finale. During the middle of the drama there is also a love storyline between him and Chun Ji Ae. Although this love is primarily one-sided (he loves her but she does not reciprocate), the moments that they have together were hysterical. I would honestly rather see him with Chun Ji Ae than Ohn Dal Soo.
Another character I really liked was Han Joon Hyuk played by Choi Chul Ho. In high school he was Chun Ji Ae's first love. However, now he is married to Yang Bong Soon and is a very unhappy guy. Although he is primarily a villain in this series, he has a lot of very funny moments. Overall even though he's primarily a villain (this changes at the end), it's hard to dislike this guy.
I didn't much care for Yang Bong Soon, the ugly duckling turned into beautiful swan. She stayed bitter throughout the majority of the series and showed very little emotional growth. While Chun Ji Ae gradually becomes a more moral character, Yang Bong Soon stays an angry backstabber throughout the series. Her lipstick was also too extreme for my tastes.
Sun Woo Sun, who played the CEO's wife, was great in her role. I think perhaps it has to do with the fact that she was smoking hot. If I were in Ohn Dal Soo's shoes I would choose her over Chun Ji Ae in a heartbeat. Although she plays a villain, she had good intentions and by the end of the series she redeems herself.
Also worthy of mention is the daughter, Jung Won. She is adorable in her portrayal and there are several extremely funny scenes with her and Chun Ji Ae.
This drama was very light hearted and entertaining. The actors are what make this series enjoyable. Although the synopsis of this drama makes it seem like a
Desperate Housewives wannabe,
Queen of Housewives has a lot more depth. Definitely take the time to watch this series. Highly recommended.
