Naked Weapon Review
Police officer Jack Chen is investigating a series of assassinations related to the mysterious Madam M. When forty preteen girls are kidnapped, Jack suspects that Madam M is creating a new generation of assassins. Among the kidnapped are Charlene Ching and Katt. Madam M puts these girls through rigorous training just to have them kill each other off after their training is completed. Being good friends, Charlene and Katt team together and defeat all the other girls except for a deadly killer named Jing. Madam M decides to keep these three girls as her assassins.
Six years after Jack's initial investigations, new assassinations are popping up here and there, and Jack must get to the bottom of the new cases. However, he experiences an intense attraction to Charlene. Can Charlene change her lifestyle or will she end up killing everyone that is important to her.
The concept is pretty kick-ass, but unfortunately the movie didn't deliver. Half the movie was spent explaining the development of the girls' training, which I felt was boring and repetitious. There wasn't enough emphasis on the storyline between Jack and Charlene, which just started to get interesting.
The action wasn't pulse-pounding, and the movie felt more like a western-style action film rather than a Hong Kong action film. Don't expect to see any amazing choreography or death-defying stunts. Maggie Q and Daniel Wu are decent at fighting, but neither of them can compare with the Zhang Ziyi's or Jet Li's of the industry. You will appreciate this movie more for the hot scenes with Maggie Q than the fighting action.
The characters were all poorly developed except for Maggie Q's Charlene Ching. Daniel Wu as Jack Chen barely got any screen time throughout the film, since the majority of the film was spent on Charlene's internal conflicts. Through the first half of the movie, there is almost no mention of Jack except for a short segment at the beginning. Jack doesn't reappear in the film until half of the movie is over. His character doesn't even affect much of the story, and it seems he was just thrown in as a love interest for Maggie Q. Katt, played by Anya, is a beautiful character, but she doesn't have many memorable scenes either (no hot stripper scenes like Maggie Q). I would have liked to see more of Jack Chen and Katt, but unfortunately the majority of the movie is given to showing off Maggie Q's sexiness (which may not be a bad thing depending on what you're after).
Under a more able director, this movie might have succeeded with flying colors. A story about beautiful women assassins is usually a good plotline, but this film couldn't connect all of its elements together. There was too little emphasis on the interesting parts of the film, and too much emphasis on the boring parts. Naked Weapon will only appeal to diehard fans of Maggie Q or someone wanting to watch two beautiful Asian women.
