NANA Review
By chance, two radically different people end up sitting by each other on a train ride to Tokyo. Both of these girls are named Nana. Nana Komatsu is a bright, cheery girl who's on her way to visit her boyfriend in Tokyo. Nana Osaki is a punk singer who has aspirations of becoming a music icon and striking luck in the big city. As fate would have it, these two girls end up attempting to buy the same apartment in Tokyo, and they decide to both live together and split the rent. Both Nana's face many problems dealing with love, relationships, and goals. As they live together, they realize their strong friendship and bond together to solve their problems.
NANA is one of those classics that should be watched by everybody. I can't even begin to express how much I liked this film. It's a deep film that can bring tears to your eyes, which makes this movie exemplary because Japanese films are not known for making people cry. Also this movie was quite a bit more majestic than I had originally thought, but probably this is due to the amazing concert scene at the end of the movie. Simply put, this movie can already rank as one of my favorite movies of all time.
The relationships in this series are so deep and intertwined that you can't help but grow attached to each character. Nana Osaki, played by Mika Nakashima, is portrayed so well that you would think that Nakashima was a professional actress instead of a professional singer. Her storyline with Ren Honjo (her ex-boyfriend) was the most intriguing in this movie, and I was very glad when there was a happy ending.
Nana Komatsu, played by Aoi Miyazaki, is the other main character in this series. Miyazaki is one of the cutest Japanese actresses out there, and she was absolutely PERFECT in this role. I couldn't imagine another girl to fit this character… maybe Aya Ueto. I loved how she portrayed the innocent and care-free spirit of Nana Komatsu and how she could bring the audience to tears with her emotion-wrought face.
This movie is a must-see. The ending scene where they are at a concert is amazing. I looked up the girl who sang the final song, and she is Yuna Ito, who is seriously an amazing vocalist. Great movie, and this should be seen by all!
