Love Contract Review
Love Contract centers on a female student named Xiao Feng. She is a tomboy who spends most of her time with a group of guys. Although she tries her best to hide her vulnerabilities on the outside, she has always wanted to fall in love and is hurt because she hasn't. On Xiao Feng's birthday, her friends try to help her fall in love by pairing her with Ah Ken, the swimming team captain. In return for recruiting members to Ken's swimming team, Ken would have to sign a "love contract" and become Xiao Feng's boyfriend. At the beginning, Ah Ken and Xiao Feng start a rough relationship, but as time passes, the two fall deeper and deeper in love, but what will happen if Xiao Feng learns the truth behind their relationship?

Love Contract is a twenty episode series. Personally, I think this is too long. There were scenes where no action was going on, yet the camera would just focus on one character that was doing nothing (the character might have been thinking or just wandering about). The story dragged out for way too long, and many episodes didn't really need to be included. Still, this series blended a good mix of humor and drama. The series is very realistic, which makes the series very true to life, yet I thought it was slightly boring because it was so ordinary and not very unique. The only thing unique to this series is the vast amount of metaphorical scenes, one example being the opening scene.

The characters aren't extreme in any way and have very common personalities. Ariel Lin had the best performance in this series because she displayed n incredibly convincing variety of emotions. Ariel Lin's character, Xiao Feng, could be seen as the girl who is a bit overprotective of herself and somewhat of a tough-girl, yet she also shows that she has weaknesses and is very vulnerable inside. Her crying scenes feel authentic, especially the ones where her makeup is actually running down her face. To be honest, Ariel fit her role perfectly, both physically (because Ariel isn't incredibly beautiful and is supposed to portray a somewhat boyish and ordinary girl) and emotionally. Mike He is also very good in his role, although he displayed less emotion and had very few outstanding scenes. He's not just a pretty face that was put into the series for eye candy; his character does show depth and growth as the series moves on. However, the chemistry between Mike He and Ariel Lin was satisfactory, it definitely wasn't perfect. I didn't feel the vibes between them that I felt from watching similar love dramas.

The opening and ending themes are in a romantic tone. They aren't cheerful or extremely sad, but they sound very pleasing. The ending theme is actually sung by Ariel Lin and is entitled Gu Dan Bei Ban Qiu. The opening is sung by Jasmine Leong and is entitled Zhong Jian (middle). I thought the opening was especially catchy and was very good.

For fans of Ariel Lin or Mike He, this series is a must-watch, but for the casual Asian drama fan, Love Contract might move a bit slow. Personally I thought the series was good, especially the ending and parts of the middle, but there were also many parts that were boring. Still, you won't be disappointed if you decide that your next drama series will be Love Contract.
