La Dolce Vita Review
La Dolce Vita starts off with the suicide of a man named Lee Joon Soo. Then we flashback to six months earlier, where Lee Joon Soo is falling for a woman named Yoon Hye Jin. Yoon Hye Jin is a married woman, but her husband is cheating on her with a young girl named Hong Da Ae. Due to her unhappiness in the marriage, Hye Jin takes a trip to Hokkaido Japan in order to escape the family turmoil. This is where she meets Lee Joon Soo who has been stalking her. Did Joon Soo really kill himself?
I had high hopes for
La Dolce Vita because the series stars Lee Dong Wook and Park Si Yeon. It took everything I had to continue watching due to the fact that I was bored out of my mind after the first two episodes. Although I did have some urge to find out what really happened, the drama dragged on and on and was just too confusing and boring to make me want to continue. Still, I hoped that the drama would pick up and that it would become better soon. It did not.
So what made the drama fare so poorly for me? I think a lot of it has to do with the fact that the drama is mainly told through flashbacks that made the pacing tedious and the storyline confusing. Flashbacks will sometimes even happen within flashbacks. So even though some person was crying, I didn't feel sad because I didn't even understand why they were crying.
Another reason I didn't feel the drama was because I couldn't relate to the characters. I can't really pinpoint why exactly I couldn't connect with the characters in this drama. Perhaps it has to do with the main character, Hye Jin, being so completely unappealing as a character. She is an older woman so maybe that's why I couldn't really see her perspective.
The darker tone of the drama also didn't suit my tastes. The series deals a lot with death, adultery, and other issues that weren't very appealing to me as a viewer. This was quite a change from the previous series I watched,
Boys Before Flowers, and I thought that such a change would be welcome. Unfortunately I didn't find that in
La Dolce Vita.
I'm writing this review after only watching five episodes. You might say that I didn't watch enough to be writing this review. Perhaps that's true, but let me tell you, five episodes was more than enough. I could already tell that I wouldn't enjoy this series after episode 1, and by episode 5 I just couldn't bear it any longer. From looking at the ratings, it seems that most people agree with me.
Such a shame, I was looking forward to seeing Lee Dong Wook and Park Si Yeon. Guess not.
