The long-awaited third installment in the Harold and Kumar series is here! They’ve reunited pretty much the entire cast of the first movie. A Very Harold and Kumar 3D Christmas takes place six years after the events of Guantanamo Bay. Harold and Kumar are no longer close friends. Harold has become a successful “adult” in the business world, married to his sweetheart Maria, and has decided that Kumar was too immature to be his friend. Kumar, on the other hand, is still very much the same guy, except he’s depressed. His girlfriend has recently left him. He’s a slob. He’s gained weight. He only has his weed to depend on.
A surprise package addressed to Harold mistakenly lands at Kumar’s apartment. Kumar, not wanting to have any reminders of Harold in his apartment, decides to deliver the package. They both open up the package to discover a monster-sized joint. Kumar lights it and takes a hit, but Harold has quit smoking so he grabs the joint and throws it out the window. Unfortunately, the “wind” blows the joint back into Harold’s house, where it sets the Christmas tree ablaze. Because the tree was a special fir tree grown by Harold’s new and very intimidating father-in-law (played by Danny Trejo), Harold and Kumar embark upon a journey to find a replacement tree, which they realize is not very easy task at all. Hilarity ensues.
The third installment plays with the Christmas theme by adding some hilarious sequences, including one where Harold and Kumar are forced to dance onstage in a musical number starring Neil Patrick Harris. Throughout the film there are also tons of pop-culture references (one of the characters calls Harold “Sulu” - which is the character that actor John Cho portrayed in Star Trek). Adding Danny Trejo as the crazy-looking father-in-law was a good touch. Comedian Bobby Lee also had a small but funny role. We also see Amir from College Humor have a pretty large role in this film.
I did feel like they cut down on a lot of the elements from previous Harold and Kumar films. We don’t see very much sexual content in this film. Harold is no longer single so that aspect of “trying to get laid” isn’t there. Kumar is also still hung up on his ex-girlfriend so he’s not looking to get laid either. As a result, we don’t see as many boobies in this film than in previous installments. There’s also not much weed smoked throughout the film. Kumar gets high at the beginning, but for the most part, both characters are sober throughout the film except for a scene where they both trip from a spiked eggnog.
But despite cutting down on boobs and drugs, Harold and Kumar still get into plenty of f*cked up situations. I won’t go into detail, but their is plenty of craziness, as you can probably tell from the trailer. Still, I don’t think this film is as good as the first one, which I still consider one of my favorite movies of all time. But it’s hard not to love Harold and Kumar, two guys who have totally changed the way the world views Asian Americans. Go see this movie!
