Gokusen Review
Gokusen is a 2002 Japanese series that aired on Nippon TV. It is also an anime series and manga series. The well-received drama series (the subject of this review), also received a second season in 2005.

Gokusen stars Yukie Nakama as Kimiko Yamaguchi and Jun Matsumoto as Shin Sawada. Kumiko Yamaguchi is hired as a teacher in Kuro High School. She soon becomes responsible for a class full of mischief and misbehaving students. The students do not trust the teacher at first, however, from her unusual attitude toward her students, they slowly become close to her. At the same time, Ms. Yamaguchi falls in love with a handsome cop that watches over the school, but she faces competition with other teachers. Gokusen tells the story of these two souls’ relationship.

This is a comedy drama that mainly consists of a teacher-student relationship between Kumiko Yamaguchi and her students. There is some action in the form of fight scenes, which creates an exciting and past-paced mood. Furthermore, the series is considered short – spanning only twelve episodes – which created a pace that was very enjoyable.

I felt that irony was present throughout the movie. Although the students are men and powerful in their ways, when it comes to protecting her students, Kimiko, a skinny woman teacher, cannot be stopped. She devotes protection towards her students as if she is the true leader of the students.

Gokusen also contains good OST including songs such as Kizuna by Kat-Tun. It adds a sweet, by dramatic theme into the story as it is played in the episodes. The music is very mood-fitting, and I felt it was very appropriate for this title.

Although I was only interested in romantic soap operas, this humorous comedy with action and romance changed my opinion about dramas. This is a fantastic drama to watch and I strongly recommend it to everyone.
