Fated To Love You also known as Sticky Note Girl is a story about Chen Xin Yi, a working class, sticky note girl with no fashion sense whatsoever who in a cruise ship ended up losing her virginity to a total stranger named Ji Cun Xi, the sole heir to a beauty product company. On this fated night, Chen Xin Yi conceived a child but Ji Cun Xi already has Anna, his long time girlfriend but since Anna is in New York pursuing an international career in ballet, Ji Cun Xi proposed to Chen Xin Yi to be his wife until she gave birth…
The storyline is refreshing. Where in Asian drama history does the love scene happen in the first episode? But it's not just the love scene nor the romance that made me crave for more of Fated To Love You. It has true love that grows slowly in between the main characters. It has unconditional love shown in the unceasing waiting of Ji Cun Xi for Anna's dreams to come true, or the way Chen Xin Yi prepared her baby book with care and unselfishness. It has a mother's love shown by Chen Xin Yi's mom, who gives courage and hope on the sidelines. It has another depth of a mother's love who agonized for the lost opportunities to nurture and love. It has the love between sisters that in spite of the bickering and differences, support and defense systems are given when needed. Another form of sibling love for the years not spent together but continuously lit a tiny hope for a sweet reunion. It has the love of a grandmother, who gives courage to a confused grandson. It shows a love of history that makes the present a gift. It also shows love of work, in which beautiful things will come out if only you love what you do. There's even pet's love showcased here, too. And there's the love for self, in which one can't go forward and be a better person if self-love and self-confidence doesn't exist.
The acting of the two main characters is very effective. Jo Chen Qiao En has an incredible charm that empowered her character. You can easily relate to her struggles and her endeavors. You cry with her when she lost her baby and her fight to improve herself in order to move forward. You can feel her aches when Ji Cun Xi is clueless and heartless. You can feel her joy when Ji Cun Xi gives her encouragement or throws a little care, or when he says "Jai-you." Ethan Ruan Jing Tian, on the other hand, has his own style portraying a heartless Ji Cun Xi. You absolutely hate him when he doesn't care about his wife and child, or when he missed a prenatal care session, or when he ignores Chen Xin Yi and constantly talks about his life with Anna when the baby is born. But when he transformed, you absolutely love him with the support he gives in the sidelines; for giving Chen Xin Yi symbols of courage in order to press on and be happy, for standing up to her even if Anna is needful of him, and for not giving up hope. It's all shown in his face, the agony and pain, the joy and laughter.
The antagonists, Dylan and Anna, might have their hateful moments for keeping the couple apart but I guess that's what makes the antagonists effective - when you let your viewers believe in your character whether it is good or bad. You can't help but like them, too. Dylan is charming, suave, handsome and caring. Anna is talented, beautiful and confident. They have loved in their own way and you can't fault them for that.
And the supporting cast is hilarious. But their characters are put there for a reason and their humors are so well-placed that the series wouldn't be complete without them. You just burst with laughter with the exaggerated sizzling hot gazes between Chen Xin Yi's eldest sister and Ji Cun Xi's assistant or the pious manner every time the name of the god of Jiang Mu Island is mentioned, or the funny Chen Lin Xi Shi with a so-called twin at the bar, or Wu Qi Qi's fainting bout when his wife is about to gave birth.
Another part of the series that one can't help but like is the soundtrack. The songs are well chosen and they are used in the right way that enhanced more the mood and gives either a smile or a tear. You just know that when My Happiness by Chin Hsiu plays in the background, you must prepare yourself for a lot of tears. I should know, I always prepare myself for a crying bout every time I hear that music play!
The series is: Dramatic. My tissues are all soggy at the tragic and drama heights of the series. Comedic. I cracked up loud with sudden laughter in every episode. Romantic. You can feel the love with a move or a glance. Action-pack. Not really but there's action and it's packed with funny moves! No wonder it gained super high ratings in viewership in its entirety.
All I can say is Jai-you! Press on people and watch this series. I highly recommend it for all romantics at heart and the jaded too, for it'll open your heart to different forms of love that needs to be treasured in one's life.
