Death Note The Last Name Review
Death Note 2 starts off right where the last movie ended. A pop idol named Misa Amane is just about to be killed when she is suddenly saved by a Shinigami named Rem. Rem is completely faithful to Amane, and gives Amane her own Death Notebook. She decides to use the notebook to seek out the original "Kira," who is Light Yagami from the first movie. They eventually meet each other, and together they try to foil the attempts of L to find out who "Kira" is. Momentarily, Light gives the power of the notebook to another owner, Kiyomi Takada, as a part of one of his intricate plans.
If you've read the Death Note manga, you will probably notice a few major differences between the manga and the movie. However, for the most part, the movie has been as faithful to the manga as it possibly can. Many storylines were cut from the movie since movies can only be around two hours long, but Death Note 2 manages to be a very smart and interesting movie.
In comparison to the first movie, I would have to say Death Note 2 falls just short. The plotlines are still quite intricate, suspenseful, and masterfully concocted, but I didn't feel the second movie lived up to the first one in terms of quality factor.
There are several new characters introduced in the second movie, including Amane Misa, Shinigami Rem, and Kiyomi Takada. Light Yagami is seen in an increasingly negative light (haha, pardon the pun) in the second movie, which fits closer with the manga. However, I must just be evil since I was rooting for Light Yagami for both movies. I also hoped the love story between Light and Misa would develop, however, this storyline never really came about.
The ending was smartly done, but I wasn't a big fan of how the movie ended. If you've read the manga, you'll see quite a different resolution in this movie, and you might be dissapointed. The ending isn't very happy, but its also not sad enough that it will make you want to shed tears. Basically, watch out for a pretty melancholy ending to the film.
Overall Death Note 2 is an ok film to watch. It was interesting throughout, however, I just didn't really like the way the film ended. Also fans of the manga should note that the translation from paper to the big screen wasn't completely accurate, so that may anger a few viewers.
