Synopsis & Review

Jiro is a lonely guy with a lonely life. On his birthday he sees a cute girl in a department store giving him cute looks. She then begins to follow him and eventually sits down with him at a restaurant. She tells him that it is her birthday as well and they have a birthday dinner together. After their meal, where she orders several plates of food and some expensive wines, they escape the restaurant without paying. While trying to escape the restaurant owner and the cops, they begin to have a romantic and fun night together. At the end of the night she tells Jiro that she must leave and also tells him that she is from the future and came to this time in a time machine. Jiro plays along with her, but she still leaves.

A year later, Jiro has not seen this girl again. Yet he has a feeling that since it is his birthday he will see her again. He begins by doing all the same things he did last year, and sure enough, the girl appears again. However, her personality is a little bit different. She reveals to him that she is a cyborg from the future sent to save him from a disaster and begins to live with him. Even though Jiro knows she's a cyborg, he begins to have feelings for her.

This movie is made by Kwak Jae-Yong, the same director who also directed My Sassy Girl and Windstruck. Several similarities between the three films exist. The girl is a beautiful girl who has a "sassy," spunky side to her, and the guy is a loveable loser who falls deeply in love with the girl. It's a formula that has worked in the past for director Jae-Yong, and it works in this movie as well.

I think the acting is really what made this film memorable because the plot was somewhat lackluster. Ayase Haruka is an amazing actress, and I'm surprised I haven't heard of her before. She really shines in her role as the Cyborg and Dream girl, where she gets the opportunity to display a wide range of emotions. Her acting as a cyborg was so convincing, and I can safely say that I have never seen anyone appear so robotic before in my life. Then she also has to play the opposite end of the spectrum, as a character who displays an incredibly array of emotions and feels love and sadness.

Keisuke Koda plays Jiro in a role that reminds me a lot of Cha Tae-Hyun's role in My Sassy Girl. In fact they look very similar too. He is a kind loner who doesn't know anything about women and love and experiences it for probably the first time with a cyborg. He has a personal struggle within himself as he realizes that the cyborg can never love him the way that he loves her. I liked the casting of Koda, who isn't ruggedly handsome or especially charismatic but plays the part of Jiro perfectly. Like Cha Tae-Hyun in My Sassy Girl, Koda is the guy that creates the humor in the movie.

As I mentioned above the plot isn't that great. The subject matter is time travel, and as such, there will be a bunch of paradoxes and unexplained happenings. Looking aside from that I thought that the ending wasn't the ideal ending. I won't spoil what happens, but it seemed like the director looked for a quick-fix for a happy ending that also clears up any plot holes. There were also some parts of the film that bothered me. One of the main reasons that Jiro falls in love with Cyborg girl is because she saves other people's lives. While this might have been great for one scene, there are three different instances where Cyborg girl saves people and Jiro feels lovey-dovey afterwards. The part where the real human girl from the future (the girl that Cyborg girl is modeled after) shows up also seems fake since she falls madly in love with Jiro in a matter of hours.

I was entertained during the movie although I still felt the plot could have been much better. Compared to the other two films, Windstruck and My Sassy Girl, Cyborg She wasn't as great of a movie. Still I really liked the acting and the humor in this film, and if you liked the other movies by this director then you should be amused with this one.
