Art of Seduction Review
Min-Jun and Ji-Won have their own techniques for making the opposite sex fall for them without failure. Both are well-known by their friends and family as players who can get anybody to become helplessly in love with them and then subsequently dump their victims when they become unsatisfied. However, when they meet each other and a mutual attraction takes place, they realize that their dating tactics don't seem to be working as flawlessly as usual. It seems that the couple has finally met someone who can match their respective skills in the arts of seduction.
While the premise of the story sounds interesting, the actual movie, quite frankly, bored me to tears. The story lacks true meaning, and even worse, the movie lacks humor as well. The movie was also paced painfully slow, and a good majority of the movie was taken to establish the background on each character. When the two leads finally did meet, it seemed like each scene was done the same, with the characters trying to figure out ways to crack and outwit each other.
Son Ye-jin's portrayal of Han Ji-won was terrible. I couldn't get over the fact that she was trying to be "cute" when I just found her voice disgusting and ridiculous. She also looks a bit old to be playing this role, which is sad considering that she is actually younger than she looks. Although her personality was supposed to be humorous, I didn't find any of her scenes to be funny at all.
The male lead is slightly better. He possesses the charisma that I would expect from a "player," and he exudes this much better than Son Ye-Jin's character. Also he has some funny scenes including a part where he is auctioned off as a gigolo to a rich old lady who turns out to be his friend's mother. Also the way he acts is much more natural than Son Ye-Jin, who tends to giggle like a schoolgirl in every scene.
The main supporting characters have very little role in this film. Min-Jun's father is shown in this movie as somewhat of another "seducer" but this portrayal was kind of disgusting considering the fact that he's probably fifty. However, these scenes were pretty funny because it was interesting to see the "playing ways" between father and son. Ji-Won's jealous lover also plays a role in this movie but his role is so small that he might as well not have been included. There were also various other characters that get dumped by the two main leads and they have very little to do with the story as well. More development between the characters was absolutely necessary, but also absolutely lacking in this film.
Although the storyline is interesting, the way that the movie was presented wasn't up to par. But the biggest flaw to this movie was probably the fact that it isn't as humorous as it should be. Considering the premise, I expected to be laughing my head off, but instead I got a movie that barely entertained me at all. Not a horrible movie but it's not that great either.
