A World Without Thieves Review
The story revolves around two highly-skilled professional thieves, Wang Bo and Wang Li, who have targeted a naive farm boy named Sha Gen as their next victim. Sha Gen, although warned by friends that his money will be stolen, believes that there are no thieves in the world, and so he carries around 60,000 yuan. After pretending to make friends with Sha Gen’s as they board a train, Wang Li, the female thief, grows emotionally attached with the boy and instead decides to protect him from the other thieves on the train as well as her boyfriend, Wang Bo. Wang Bo is disgusted with Wang Li’s apparent sudden change of heart, and he plots to steal Sha Gen’s money for himself. All the while, a violent war is brewing among the thieves in the train, each of them vying for the 60,000 yuan that Sha Gen is carrying.
A World Without Thieves is actually the first Andy Lau movie I’ve seen, and he’s made me a fan. The movie, directed by renowned filmmaker Feng Xiao Gen, was one of the most intriguing and interesting Chinese movies I have ever seen. It’s a smart film that explores the moralities of human beings and presents thought-provoking ideas about society in general. It also has some interesting stunts, and although it’s no Jackie Chan action thriller, there’s enough action in here to make the movie quite exciting.
The actors and actresses are all exceptional. I’ve mentioned that Andy Lau is in the film, and he is one of the standout actors in the movie. Rene Liu, Li Bing Bing, Wang Bao Qiang, and Ge You are also very good, and each of them brought unique elements to the movie. Rene Liu and Li Bing Bing definitely added the sex appeal that is needed for any movie, while Wang Bao Qiang’s created humor and Ge You epitomized the edgy villain character.
Overall, A World Without Thieves is just a fantastic action drama that broke records in the Chinese industry for good reason. A topnotch cast, with a topnotch director assured that the movie was very successful. It is definitely recommended for anyone interested in seeing an Asian movie that is deeper than the usual action kung-fu film.
