Kwon Sang Woo, a South Korean actor and model, was made known to Asian countries through his character as Cha Song Joo in Stairway to Heaven. And even with the advent of his box office movies like Almost Love and Running Wild, he still refers to himself as a "frog in a well," a Korean expression for a person who knows nothing about the outside world.
This hugely popular Korean joins Margaret Thatcher and Princess Diana in having an orchid hybrid named after him at Singapore’s Botanic Gardens, an honor usually reserved for guests of state. His name was given to a violet orchid of a new species, and he was the second South Korean actor to be honored in this way after Bae Yong Joon. The naming ceremony was originally planned to be opened to 100 fans but more than one thousand fans from various Asian countries flocked to the venue to see him.
He was also named primary spokesperson for The Face Shop, appearing in a variety of advertising and appearances in Korea and other Asian countries. His popularity soars even higher when Japan released a Kwon Sang Woo Stamp, the third one of the Hallyu! Entertainment Stamp Series, worth 3,150 yen each.
With his handsome looks and impressive physique, he is internationally viewed as a sex symbol and was named Most Beautiful Man on various websites and magazines. He liked women with good complexions and beautiful eyes and believes that there are no national boundaries when it comes to love.
Kwon Sang Woo will be starring in a Korean drama entitled Bad Love (못된 사랑) by mid 2007.
