RE: Which anime got you into the anime world?
When I was younger I saw the preview for the Akira anime series advertised on tv, it was a infomercial and I liked how the characters were drawn. And it struck an interest in me. But back in the day when Nickelodian was starting out I use to watch this anime I never knew it was anime, all I knew it was this cartoon that had the intro song in a language I could not understand. It was about this girl who had this stuff animal and when she rubbed noses the stuff animal a Kawala came to life and she had all sorts of adventures with the Kawala and his pal a female kawala, and she would be with her grandmother too. That channel showed Vampire Hunter D, and I watched it I was only a kid. Also I have this doll from a cartoon I use to watch it was anime I'm quite sure it was. But I did not know it at the time that it was anime that was not in my vocabulary when I was at that age.
In one episode had the character the doll represented; and she was this singer and her boyfriend and the others who was with her, were in these glass tubes like you would see in a space ship or in space on a colony up in space and she was singing to save them I think. I don't know the title I still have the doll in torso form, her legs after awhile kept falling off and the legs are somewhere, and it was made in Japan. When she was brand new, she was in this ice blue 80's dress(I'm 28, so in the mid and late 80's I was a little girl, I grew up in the 90's) with silver ruffles running up the side and she came with a mic. She was built like a Barbie doll but she was not a Barbie doll, but she was not an action figure either. Maybe one of you guys knows what anime I'm talking about. Also I use to watch Thundercats and the team who drew the characters are well known Japanese artist who drew for anime. So those shows got me hooked on anime. Without knowing that they were anime. I always liked how the anime characters were drawn, but I really got into it late in life when I was in my twenties. The first anime I rented was Akira on video cassette at a video mat, then later I bought the DVD when I saw it. I guess I'm a late bloomer, then my J-rock love came into play but I always loved music from around the world...
