Hong Kong actress-singer Kelly Chen married her longtime boyfriend, Alex Lau, today after 16 years of courtship.

During an interview before the wedding, Kelly Chen said she will continue working after the wedding, and will only stop temporarily if she gets pregnant.

Following Hong Kong star couple Tony Leung and Carina Lau's much-discussed wedding in Bhutan, Kelly Chen's wedding is another highly anticipated event for the media and the public.

During the banquet ceremony, Kelly shed tears of joy as she was being comforted by her new husband, Alex Lau. Kelly and Alex exchanged vows before hundreds of relatives and friends within the ballroom containing 52 tables for family and friends. Eric Tsang (曾志偉) and Jerry Lamb (林曉峰) were the MCs.

The bride wore an off-white wedding dress, with a 10-metre train and 999 cloth flowers, designed by friend and art director Kenneth Yee (奚仲文). Her six-carat wedding ring matched her 10-carat diamond earrings. The groom looked smart in a black tuxedo.

In a touching moment after the couple crossed arms for a customary champagne toast, Kelly became overwhelmed with emotion and dabbed a tissue to her damp eyes, while comforted by her new husband.

In a photo call just before the ceremony Kelly had told reporters: "I thought I'd be moved to tears by now, but I haven't yet because I've been in a rush all day. I've been too busy to cry."

She added: "I'm still not used to being called 'Mrs Lau'."

Kelly's manager revealed that Alex paid for the wedding and that the banquet alone cost around HK$3 million.

The generous couple also laid on 12 tables and an $888-a-head buffet in a separate room for journalists.

Kelly's Bridesmaids Challenge Her Groom

Kelly Chen (陳慧琳) married her partner of 16 years, Alex Lau (劉建浩), at the InterContinental Hotel today.

Kelly, with hair and make-up already done, arrived at the hotel first and was met by hundreds of reporters and photographers.

Before Alex was allowed to collect his bride, Kelly's 10 bridesmaids, in the spirit of a traditional Chinese wedding, played games with the groom and his 10 groomsmen.

After handing over a 9,999.9 dollar lucky packet, Alex had to complete five challenges, while Kelly watched it all on a live link to her hotel room.

For the first challenge, Alex had to take an armpit hair from one of his groomsmen and put it under his nose as a fake moustache.

The second game had Alex perform a sexy pole dance.

For round three, Alex had to sing a rap song about his undying love for Kelly.

For challenge four, Alex had to hula-hoop to show that he is keeping his fitness up after getting in shape for the wedding day.

The final game had each groomsman put on lipstick. Alex then had to kiss each of them to transfer the ten lipstick marks onto a napkin for Kelly.
