Taking Risk: Chapter 2
Risk And Change

Whether you think you are a big risk taker, or none at all, you might consider why the topic is so very important. Everyone wants to get more out of life! In one way or another, everyone hopefully wants some growth and improvement. People cannot really be happy without growth, development, and greater self-esteem. Some of these people may falsely assume only riches or titles will make them happier. One person wants a million dollars. Another individual wants to become president. But much evidence and research suggest these are not the paths to happiness.

Growing and striving for self-actualization is what make life worthwhile. But all growth requires change.

If lack of self-esteem, for example, is your problem, you might begin to consider this point: Opportunity is a threat to a pessimist, but a challenge to an optimist. So you could try to consider your lower self-esteem as a challenge to become more optimistic -- a more optimistic risk taker. People are willing to be risk takers and accept change are not typically low in self-esteem. People who are lowest in self-esteem are those who refuse any small risks.

All of Life Is A Risk

Las Vegas gamblers understand clearly that betting is risk taking. The average person, however, often forget that risk taking is betting, and that you are betting every time you pass a car on a highway, buy a house or car, start up your own business, change jobs, or even maintain thing as they are NOW!

People do behave differently if they have a chance to affect the outcome, to become part of the equation. Only the odds (luck) and another's skill affect the outcome. Yet, other people will become bigger risk taker if they can themselves affect the outcome.

Helen Keller quotes: "Security is mostly a superstition. It does not exist in nature, nor do the children as a whole experience it. Avoiding danger is no safer in the long run than outright exposure. Life is either a daring adventure or nothing."
