Winter Sonata - anime date release

The official website for the television anime adaptation of the Korean drama Winter Sonata (Fuyu no Sonata) has begun streaming three preview videos for the anime's episode 0. The preview videos come in a three-minute version, a one-minute version with the song "Hajime kara Ima made (Piano Version)," and another one-minute version with the song "Believe you" by Yoonji.

The original 2002 drama follows a girl named Yu Jin Jung and her male classmate Joon Sang Kang as tragedy and angst befalls them and those around them in the years between high school and young adulthood. The 2004 Japanese broadcast triggered the ongoing "Korean wave" of pop culture in Japan and turned the lead actor Yong Joon Bae into a superstar among Japanese female viewers. The Japanese publisher Ohzora Publishing Co. eventually imported and translated the drama's manhwa adaptation under the title Winter Love Song.

The videos feature voice-acting by the two main leads from the original drama, Bae (Kang) and Ji Woo Choi (Jung). Bae had agreed to reprise his role as part of the 2007-2008 deal that gave his Key East company's production credit for the anime, and Choi agreed to join the cast shortly thereafter. The anime will premiere on the Skyper! SkyChan HD and DATV channel in Japan on October 17.

South Korean golfer beats Tiger Woods in the PGA tournament

South Korean golfer Yang Yong-eun stunned the world by beating Tiger Woods at the PGA Championship earlier this month, on the way becoming the first Asian-born winner of a major golfing event.

Tiger Woods has won over 70 PGA championships, and is ranked #1 top player in the world; Y.E Yang is ranked #110 and only won one PGA tournament. It proves to say that triumphant prevails.

Unlike so many pro-golfers, Body builder-turn-golfer, Yang first taught himself how to play by watching Jack Nicklaus videos when he was 19-years-old. Extraordinary don't you think?

Lady Gaga talks with CNN's Talk Asia

Just before her last concert of her Asian tour, CNN's Talk Asia has the privilege to have an exclusive interview with 23-year-old pop star, Lady Gaga.

Lady Gaga (real name Stefani Germanotta) arrived for the interview backstage at the Venetian Hotel's concert arena.

Going from performing in clubs in New York and writing songs for already rising stars such as Britney Spears and The Pussycat Dolls, Gaga is the verge to stardom with her infectious dance tunes and intriguing fashionista. As of today, Gaga's debut album, "The Fame" has reached No. 4 in the Billboard charts.

Along the interview, the interviewer Kristi Lu-Stout asked if Lady Gaga was her persona. She claims Lady Gaga is not a persona. She stated, "We could sit here and talk, but you will never know who I am unless you see me live."

"I'm sort of a musical pop music misfit" and "a relentless bitch," she said in response to how she had got to the top of the music industry.

Being asked on how she deals with being in the public's eye and internet rumors spreading like fire? You'd have to watch the full interview to find out how she answered these questions.

4minute's album cut down to 6 songs

4minute's upcoming album was recently leaked online. Now the album contains only six songs instead of the seven songs that was originally planned.

But why did the song, "MUZIK", get the axe?

KBS revealed that "MUZIK" had some lyrics that could have some unwanted sexual connotations. These include lines that read, "From today I won’t give you me / Once again I won’t give you my whole heart / Now I won’t give you."

4minute's representation rebutted these accusations by stating that these lyrics represent "a naive image of a girl expressing her sad feelings toward the boy friend."

Seems like it's not very sexual to me, but hey, Koreans are more conservative.

Ethan Ruan takes beating in new movie, Monga

As Jay Chou was suppose to be playing one of the main triad member of the new action pack movie, Monga, it has been confirmed that Ethan Ruan will be replaced for this character. In the movie plays the star of Ethan Ruan and Mark Chao, who plays members of the triad that reflects the exact street style of Taiwan society in the 1980 era.

To follow along the same style, Ethan Ruan have to shave his head every 3 to 4 days to maintain his character's crew cut on the show; following, bruises and swells from kicks from 9 in the morning to 12 midnight for the beating scenes.

In the movie, his character gets taught a lesson and trashed around by Ma Ru Long's character. Despite the injuries, Ruan thought nothing of it and said, "It's ok."

Also, Chao praised Ruan for his persistence and endurance by complimenting him for his professionalism. Ruan says, "When I was much younger, if people were to treat me like this, I would have immediately flared up on them. I won't be as self-controlled."

This will be the first time Ethan Ruan takes on a role of a triad member. The movie is set to be released on around Chinese New Year of 2010.

[Updated] Lee Dong Wook Off to Military Service on August 24

Actor Lee Dong Wook will be off for his mandatory two-year military service on August 24, 2009. Just merely three days away Korean time. He will be reporting in Nonsan's army training facility on the said day.

Seeing that his drama Partner recently concluded a week ago and he's currently filming Bean Paste with Lee Yo Won, he initially seek for postponement of the enlistment date but was denied. With this tight schedule, he will be filming for the coming days and spent the last day with family.

A Bean Paste source said: "Lee Dong Wook has a tremendous amount of devotion to this movie. The whole staff is touched to see him putting in his all through the very last."

Lee Dong Wook arrived at the army training center in Nonsan, Chuncheong province, in the afternoon of August 24, for the five-week basic army training before being assigned to active duty. Approximately 100 fans sent him off showing love through well wishes and love gifts.

AmpedAsia Exclusive: Warped Tour Live Performances 2009

Hey AmpedAsians!

Yesterday, I went to an event called Vans Warped Tour 2009 with my sisters and friends. For the ones who aren't aware of what that is, it's an event where numerous bands from around the globe travel together to perform in various cities around the world. They stopped at our city as one of their tour's venue before heading off to Sacramento, CA then to San Diego, CA.

The crowds were screaming with anticipation, fans sweating in the extreme heat, booming music that could blast your ears off if you stand too close. Everyone had a blast, including me. Even though I went home early as I couldn't stand the heat, I felt honored to meet unfamiliar faces and seeing these bands performed live. It was amazing!

Surprisingly, I had the opportunity to meet Meg+Dia in person, autograph poster signed, and pictures taken.

Who is Meg+Dia?

Meg+Dia is a band of 5 people of various ethnicities from Utah, CA:

Dia Frampton: Vocals
Meg Frampton: Vocals/guitar
Nick Price: Drums
Jonathan Snyder: Bass
Carlo Gimenez: Guitar

They performed live really well and I was much surprised on how good the lead singer's singing ability. If you're wondering why Meg and Dia looks like they have Asian facial features, it's because they are Asians. Meg, Dia, and Carlo all have Asian background. Meg and Dia are half Caucasian and half Korean. If you thought Meg and Dia looks pretty in pictures, they are even prettier in person.

It would be awesome to see more Asians conquer the rock stage.

DBSK fans petition against unjust contract terms

DBSK fans have petitioned online against SM Entertainment's unjust contract terms after hearing word of their treatment. The fan site Dsite submitted an online petition against SM which has already garnered 120,000+ signatures.

The first trial will be taking place on August 21, 2009.

Here are excerpts from the ad sent in to the newspapers created by petitioners.

What is your work environment like?

1. You must work for at least 13 years
2. You must work 7 days a week of every month of every year
3. Someone else is in charge of your entire income. It is impossible to negotiate on your income
4. All of your schedules and business aims are handled by your office
5. If you do not work for 13 years, you must pay hundreds of billions of Won in compensation
6. If you cannot work for a time due to personal reasons, the term of your contract is lengthened

*At the bottom, flipped upside down*
1~2 Y: You are in no danger. Earn a lot of money
3~5 Y: You may want to consider changing jobs
6 Y: You are TVXQ.

They are worn out emotionally and physically because they have been doing anything and everything their agency has been telling them to do for the past five years.

They have asked numerous times for a reevaluation and revision of their unlawful contract, but their agency does not listen to their pleas.

The term for TVXQ’s exclusive contract is 13 years.
If they decide to cancel their contract during that time, they must pay thrice the amount of investments, and twice the amount of money they would have earned during the entire term of the contract for compensation.

This applies even when the contract is canceled after negotiations with the agency.

DBSK forced to a corner; freedom comes at a price of 10.6 billion TWD

Unsatisfied with their treatment under their managing company, members of Korean superstar boyband Dong Bang Shin Ki, namely Xiah Junsu, Youngwoong Jaejoong and Micky Yoochun have brought their case to court.

However, once the hearing is held and if the members lose their case, a compensation sum of approximately 10.6 billion TWD will have to be paid, tantamount to forcing them into a tight corner.

At the beginning of this month, news of the three members being dissatisfied with SM Entertainment and wanting to leave had begun to surface. In return, SM declared publicly that there was no such thing, and even professed that if they wanted to leave, then they would have to pay to do so.

Once the news of this got out, the 800 thousand strong fan base of Dong Bang Shin Ki almost immediately took action, firstly by using the cancellation of the SM Town Concert to start a boycott of SM products as a form of support for their idols.

SM Entertainment has also seemingly not cared much about all of these measures fans have been taking. Instead, SM has been registering the names of their popular groups such as Super Junior and So Nyeo Shi Dae (Girls’ Generation) as well as Dong Bang Shin Ki, in order to prevent Dong Bang Shin Ki from starting over elsewhere.

According to news reports, a seminar where media experts and scholars came together to discuss this problem all stood on DBSK’s side, saying that SM has used DBSK merely for profit, and the amount that they are paid every year, five miliion TWD, is ridiculous.

Now that DBSK wants their freedom back, the price that they have to pay is far too much, and purely a device to back them into a corner that they cannot retreat out of.

The “Dong Bang Shin Ki Seminar”, co-held by fans, scholars and media experts, was held in order to examine what would happen in the case if the three members lost the case: the end result would be to pay the 10.6 billion TWD compensation sum.

Thus, fans have denounced SM as a bloodsucking company, and they wish to voice out for their idols via the SM boycott

G-Dragon Releases His First Solo Album!

G-Dragon, the leader of idol group Big Bang just released his first solo album Heartbreaker! The album consist of 10 songs which features a handful of fellow YG artists. His title track, "Heartbreaker" will be the first song promoted. The album was also released on G-Dragon's birthday, August 18.

His title song has been accused of plagiarizing Flo-rida's "Right Round" due to the 30 second preview that G-Dragon has released on his Me2day (a korean version of Twitter).

BEP's Apl.de.Ap Launches Jeepney Music in Ecco Ultra Lounge

Filipino-American international performer Allan Pineda Lindo, popularly known as Apl.de.Ap of the Black Eyed Peas, launched his own record label, Jeepney Music last Monday (August 11) in West Hollywood's Ecco Ultra Lounge.

Spotted on the launch are fellow Black Eyed Peas members Will.i.am, Taboo, and Fergie. Also in attendance were America's Best Dance Crew Season 3 winners Quest Crew's Steve Terada, Victor Kim, Hok, Andy Luo, Ryan Feng and Ryan Conferido; DJ Mia, former PCD Carmit Bashar, hip hop artist Kid Cudi, actor Lou Diamond Phillips, founder of VuQo Rich Cabael, RnB Singer Ryan Espe, Singer Asia Cruise, DJ Rocky Rock among others.

Currently, the music label features artists from around the world including artists from Korea, South Africa, India, and of course, the Philippines.

The music label's first project might be the release of apl.de.ap's first solo album, which features You Can Dream, his debut single featuring the voice of another Fil-Am international singer Billy Crawford. The album is said to be released sometime this August. And in an earlier interview with Asian Journal, he disclosed a collaboration with Filipino-American hip hop music producer Chad Hugo of The Neptunes to incorporate traditional Filipino instruments into his music.

[Updated] Dara of 2ne1 Back in the Philippines

YG Entertainment granted the members of 2ne1 to four to five days vacation as a well-deserve incentive for their hard work and success for the last three months! Thus, Dara a.k.a. Sandara Park opted to visit Philippines again. Her last visit was in August of last year.

Dara arrived early Thursday (August 13) morning and immediately proceeded to the ABS-CBN studios for a television guesting for Ruffa and Ai, a morning talk show, with her friends back in her Star Circle Quest (SCQ) days . She was seen teaching the hosts of the show and her SCQ friends the moves of I Don't Care, 2ne1's hit single from their self-entitled mini-album on TV Patrol World.

Note: As of Friday (August 14), the Ruffa and Ai episode was not aired yet. The taped episode might be aired sometime next week. Check out for more updates in the coming days.

This looks like more work for Dara rather than a break but it seems she's happy to be with friends again and to be back in the industry that first gave her a break as a performer-cum-actress.

With her arrival, the famous Sandara wave is back!

Meanwhile, CL is reported to be going to Japan, Park Bom to the States, and Minzy to visit her grandmother.

Korea Foundation for International Culture Exchange has revealed the second line-up of performers to the 6th Annual Asia Song Festival, which will be held on September 19, 2009 in Seoul World Cup Stadium. A few days ago, the first line-up consisting of Super Junior and SNSD, was revealed.

Based on the line up for the Korean performers, two groups are from SM Entertainment namely Super Junior and So Nyeo Shi Dae, and two groups are from YG Entertainment namely Big Bang and 2NE1. This is a major breakthrough for newcomer 2NE1 for they only debuted last May of this year.

It's not clear though if more performers will be added in the coming days or weeks. Filipino performers are sadly lacking on the lineup which has been graced by Barbie Almalbis and Rivermaya in previous years. But one thing is evident, DBSK who has been consistently part of the festival since year one is not part of the current line up probably due to the pending case versus SM Entertainment.

Jamie Chung cast in suspense/horror film, Sorority Row (2009)

"Sorority Row", a remake from the 1983 film "House On Sorority Row" will be out in theaters worldwide starting September 11, 2009.

Directed by Stewart Hendler, five sorority girls (Audrina Patridge, Rumer Willis, Briana Eviga, Jamie Chung, and Margo Harshman) inadvertently cause the murder of one of their sisters in a prank gone wrong, they agree to keep the matter to themselves and never speak of it again, so they can get on with their lives. This proves easier said than done , when after graduation a mysterious killer goes after the five of them and anyone who knows their secret.

Within the movie, Korean-American actress Jamie Chung plays one of the sorority girl named Claire who possesses a flirtatious personality of the five.

This movie is rated R due to it graphic strong bloody violence, language, some sexuality/nudity and partying.

Korean version of Itazura na Kiss a.k.a. It Started with a Kiss in the Making

The Japanese manga, Itazura na Kiss, will get a Korean live adaption which has a working title of 장난스런 키스 or Playful Kiss. Back in 2005, it was made into the hit Taiwanese series It Started With a Kiss which stars Joe Cheng and Ariel Lin.

Group Eight, the producers of Boys Over Flowers, the Korean Hana Yori Dango, will be taking on the said adaptation and which will have a tentative broadcast premier in the summer of 2010.

It was also reported that the licensing has been finalized, and they are currently in the planning stages and finding a scriptwriter.

Furthermore, it was reported that since the original manga has no official ending due to the death of the writer before finishing the manga, Playful Kiss might have an "entirely different, Korean-style ending."
