RE: False Friends among Philippine Languages
If your a foreiner or just learning to learn the language you'll be victimized by this words but a fluent speaker won't. beacause this words may have been spelled the same way or may sound the same but filipino know what it means when use in conversation. the trick to this word is pronunciation, and also the sentence will give the meaning of the word and in writing this ( ' ) is use to identify which meaning of the word your trying to express. to correct some of the words toyo means soysauce and fishsauce is called patis. spider web is called agiw not agi. in ilocano abay means friend, not beside a person. aga in filipino univerally means morning but if you ad the word ma like this ma-aga now it means early. there are manny more word that i want to correct but, i have no time, most pilipino think that studying filipino is easy but manny of them don't know how to write it using proper filipino gramar, just like american having problem using proper english gramar when writing esay.

RE: False Friends among Philippine Languages
Whoa! It's been 2 years since I last updated the list!!! I've added 53 more words...

oopsie! I haven't answered Solracecca's comment/corrections... sorry...

@Solracecca: Thank you for your inputs Smile You're correct that the trick is in the pronunciations and how they are used in conversations, but I have a few justifications!
  1. Re: Toyo-patis ~ that's correct but I'm talking about toyo in Tagalog means soy sauce and toyo in Hiligaynon means fish sauce... Just as I've said in my note, it's really confusing if you're conversant with the two languages
  2. Re: Spider web ~ Yes spider web is agiw in Tagalog but spiderweb is agi in Kapampangan. But since I'm not conversant in Kapampangan, I might be wrong. But I did research about it via the net...
  3. Re: Abay ~ I'm an Ilocano and I know that abay means beside in Ilocano. For example: "Abay ti simbaan" means beside the church.
  4. Re: Aga ~ Yes maaga means early in Tagalog. You could also use "ang aga" which means really early... but morning in Tagalog is umaga, not just the word aga.
