Men in Pain
Men in Pain
Main Characters:
Damian Lau, Ron Ng, Louis So, Toby Leung, Florence Kwok, Rebecca Chan, Johnson Lee
From a woman's perspective: it's hard to be a woman, it's even harder to feel the pain of men. From a man's perspective: What's so hard about being a woman, why can't people understand the pressures of men? This series talks about different generations of men, who are facing different types of pressures. Damian Lau is the head of the family who has so many responsibilities at work and at home. Because of all the pressures, he became a very self centered person. Damian's son Ron Ng is an optimistic person, who cares less about anything until one day he becomes a father himself...
Family problems, working situations, money problems, all types of troubles can make the men feel a lot of pain. How do the men handle those pressures? How did they fail? How did they success after failure? How do women understand the pain of men? This is the series to watch.
THE FACTORS
- Love Factor -
Ron Ng
This is a different Ron Ng you are expecting. The immature, impulsive Ron still exists, but only in the beginning of the series, when he was careless about everything. Soon enough, he became a father, a new husband who needs to take care of a new family. Ron matures so much throughout the whole series, he started to care more about his family, care more about the next generation, he started to do everything for the people around him. This is the perfect husband every girl dreams for: cute, handsome and mature. Thinking about Ron's image in his older series, it is very hard to imagine him in a good father role, but watching this series will totally change your mind. Ron does an excellent job in this series. I have also noticed his improvements on his facial expressions. There was one scene where he yelled at his father, wooo, his whole face turned red and so did I. Also, I need to mention all the scenes he shared with Damian, they built an excellent father-and-son chemistry together.
Damian Lau
This is also a different Damian you will see. He is not the strict teacher in Find the Light, not the evil master in Number One in the World, and definitely not the insane husband in Hard Fate. In this series, he is the man with lots of pain. His pressures came from different sources, from wife, from Ron, from in-laws, and from work. It is hard to deal with all these pressures at the same time, this is why he became a little crazy about everything. Damian's character is extremely funny, especially when he makes his facial expressions. You can blame him for being annoying, or complicated, but you will also understand his pain.
Florence Kwok
O, I love her character so much, she is a very interesting person, who doesn't believe in marriage. Throughout the series, she helped a lot of people, but never gained any confidence on marriage. I just love her character, because it is really refreshing to see her again.
Tears with Laughter
Watching this series can make you laugh and cry at different times. There are so many awesome scenes to mention, but the following ones are my favorite:
- PG 13 ONLY: There is love, but no sex (episode 2)
I remember reading the news about how the HK audiences complaint about the content of this series (mainly from episode 2). True, the producer used a very bold point to express a man's pain, but the point is well taken, and the episode was extremely funny. I am talking about the bed scene between Damian and Louisa, when they "faked" the sex scene... that was the funniest part of the series
- Johnson Lee and Ron Ng
The scenes between Johnson Lee and Ron were so funny, the two of them pretend to be gay to scare Johnson's girlfriend away. Later on, they also tried to scare Johnson's mother, that was when Johnson was hurt, and Ron tried to take care of him, and Ron kept saying, "sorry, sorry, did I hurt you?", that scene was so fun to watch.
- The Future Diary
This diary made me cry like crazy. Before Toby decided to go to New York to study for a year, Ron wrote this future diary to give to Toby. After reading the diary, Toby decided to give up the study and stay with Ron. I really like the idea of this future diary, this is a perfect gift for anyone...
- Dislike Factor -
Rebecca Chan
She yells way too much, and she is a control freak, I just hate the way she controls her husband and kids.
Mr. Hong Kong
It is very obvious that TVB wants to promote Mr. Hong Kong Rocky Cheng (by the way, Rocky's character in Men in Pain is also called Rocky). It's very obvious that he can not act, and I didn't care about how he acts. The acting didn't bother me much, but there is one useless scene that destroys his image, that's when he took his shirt off in the restaurant, trying to fight Damian. The scene was suppose to be great, because it shows us that Damian still loves Louisa very much, and he is willing to do anything to help her, including fighting Rocky, but I don't understand why Rocky had to take off his shirt, it's totally unnecessary. I felt like the producer just add that scene to show off Rocky's body. After Rocky took of his shirt, I was like, Oh my god, please get this scene over with...
- Chemistry Factor -
Damian and Ron
The father and son relationship was the highlight of the entire series. I love the way they support each other, yell at each other, and love each other.
Ron and Toby
Not sure if they even match, I loved their story, the way they help each other and the way they take care of the baby, but I just can't stand Toby. I would prefer anyone else to play Toby's role.
Damian and Louisa
Their marriage problem began when the series began, but it didn't end until the series ended. They had so many problems throughout the entire series, they fight, they break up, they even wanted to divorce. I thought their marriage problem dragged a little bit, but it was nice to see they finally solved all the problems.
THE COMMENTS
- The Performances -
Ron gets the best actor prize, he really matures a lot in his ways of acting. Maybe because of Damian, I just loved the two of them together. Best actress, I will say Florence Kwok, simply because I love her character.
- The Story -
The entire story is very special, if you are a fan of La Femme Desperado, you will love this series even more, because it completes the human nature. From both series, you will learn one thing for sure: it is hard to be human.
- Worth Watching? -
YES. This is one of the best series in 2006 so far, the producer also put in a lot of humor along with the serious issues, the entire series is enjoyable, entertaining and educating. For all the Ron fans out there, you will love this series and love Ron even more.

RE: Men in Pain
Muhahaahhaha!!!!
I love the dislike factor about Rocky. First, I don't know him and I've never seen his acting. But I'm used to this kind of situation: someone who can't do the job but everyone is trying so hard to make viewers accept him!!! Grrrrr!!! I can picture the scene in my head!!!! Thanks for the warning!!!!
