Religious, Traditional, Violent and Funny; what else would you want in an anime. From Legened to Manga then to Anime, Saiyuki is one of few on going series.
Synopsis: Priest Sanzo makes a Journey West--with Water Spirit, Gojyo, Ex-Human, Hakkai, and the famous Monkey King, Goku(Yes the same Goku in Dragon Ball)--through the land where demon and human are no longer friends, in the quest for the Sutra. Many challenges await them as demons crave a high priest's blood.
But unlike the famous legend, Sanzo is no ordinary priest. He smokes, he drinks, he gambles, and best of all, he carries around a gun. Smacking heads and commanding his loyal friend, Goku, is what he does best.
Goku, once trapped in a rock for 500 years, kicks butt with a pole that changes form. He eats as if he was making up for the wasted 500 years without food.
Gojyo, simply put, the pimp. Complete ladies man who constantly gets into fights with Goku. This water spirit surprises one like no other. He's funny, he's cool, and he's a good fighter to boot using a unique polearm.
Also different from the legend, Hakkai (who is a selfish pig like creature in the legend) is a handsome carring man. His dragon Hakryu, changes from dragon to jeep in an instant (in the legend Hakryu was a man punshed by the gods and forced to become the horse of the High Priest). Hakkai fights with his "chi."
Saiyuki is simply like no other. It's colorful animation and modern language will simply keep you in awe. The fight scenes are a lacking a little finess yet there are a lot of action scenes. Besides the great Shonen themes there is a little romance and, of course, Bishonen for the Shojo (or anyone) fans. The voice acting in both English and Japanese is supurb. You cannot feel the same emotion in any other anime. I mean, come on, who wouldn't want to see a High Priest say "Dude, shut the Hell up and move your ass!"
