Toby Chan crowned as Miss Hong Kong 2010 stirs controversy

It was a sweet victory for Toby Chan to bag 3 rewards including Miss International Goodwill, Tourism Ambassador, and the Miss Hong Kong 2010 crown on August 01, 2010. However, critics have made remarks that her victory was courtesy of her boyfriend, who is a sponsor of the pageant.

Tabloids have been buzzing with a possible romance blossoming between Toby Chan and Jacky Wong, heir to travel agency Hong Thai, a major sponsor of the Miss Hong Kong pageant.

But really, none of these things would matter if the girl would look prettier. People are just upset because they think the girl is not gorgeous. In fact, there is a Facebook group for "Hong Kong porkchop Toby Chan" to express discontent with the new beauty queen.
(in Cantonese slang, "porkchop" refers to an ugly girl.)

In response to being called "porkchop", Chan said the label doesn't bother her because she thinks pigs are rather cute.

that's funny how people have so much time on their hands to actually start a facebook group for this....i mean she is miss hong kong for one year..it's not like she just became the president of the country...lol..

That's how netizens are, they have nothing better to do other than abusing others by making defamatory remarks or websites.

Maybe this will all die down. It does kinda look bad that her significant other is the sponsor, but really, aren't there a whole panel of judges, not just one? and he was the sponsor, LOL. that means he already paid for it all xD No need to tip the scales in his girl's direction.

sad to know... given she's not that what many expects they must give respect to her and must not do things like that, winning that crown for an ugly lady (just what they say) would not kill a thing. sigh!!

But he's also a possible future sponsor and if he's one of the largest to sponser the pageant they'd be a fool to sully that relationship. I think it's an unfair advantage and is definitely cause for suspicion BUT calling her ugly is just plain cruel and unnecessary.
