In the Philippines, especially in the multimedia industry (showbiz, advertising, PR etc) and even call centers, gays are often imitated out of fondness or affection. It is only in the Philippines that I have ever heard people use terms for the word "homosexuals" as terms of endearment. Its very cute and quite liberating. people calling each other badey, bex, bakla, beksikels, badush, badet, (all are terms for the word "gay") out of affection for each other. You can hear girls call their gay friends or girlfriends that. guys even use the terms without intent to be insulting. Filipinos love gays! hear hear! that is why everybody want to learn gay lingo. you are not "in" if you don't use such terms as chorva, eklaboom, eklat, eklavu (terms when you can't remember the correct term) or common replies of affirmation like CHECK! TRUELEBAMBAM! (yes, true) or even PALANGANITANG De POK POK (just to say "correct")
Thank you for your thoughts, but kindly allow me to express some of mine.
Please note that there's a difference between being discriminated and being accepted as reality. The issue of discrimination is beyond "terms of endearment" and social interactions - which in most cases are superficial, conditional and/or patronizing (i.e. "I love my gay friends but I will NEVER come to terms with having a homosexual child," or "it's OK to be gay as long as they are like this or act like that.") What you might mean is like saying "there are women who are independent and successful, so there's no more discrimination against women," when in fact, in this very moment, women are still being oppressed because of their gender. The fact that Filipino homosexuals can come up with such a linguistic system simply reflects the level of oppression they encounter everyday, and how they socially cope with such.
Effeminate homosexuals may be "imitated out of fondness", and yet this is only because people find their behavior amusing - which is offensively condescending. It is simply out of novelty and not of genuine affection. In reality, whether be it in most Filipino family settings in particular, or in Philippine Society in general, homosexuals continuously struggle to be accepted and lawfully recognized.
