Shopping is pretty easy in Japanese, the words aren't too hard to pronounce either. Next time you get the chance, you should try to practice with a Japanese store clerk. I can assure you it'll impress them. Here's a quick story: so while I was in a Japanese antique store, I saw this pot thing and I had no idea what it was. Instead of asking the clerk in English, I tried Japanese. He was thoroughly impressed to see someone my age (and let's face it, my race) speaking it. Never be afraid to ask!

これは何ですか。
Kore wa nan desu ka?
What is this?

これは星についての本です。
Kore wa hoshi nitsuite no hon desu.
This is a book about stars.

いくらですか。
Ikura desu ka?
How much is it?

この本は三千円する。
Kono (same as "kore") hon wa sanen en (yen) suru.
This book costs 3,000 yen.

あれは何ですか。
Are wa nan desu ka?
What is that?

あれはペンです。
Are wa pen desu.
That is a pen.

I know this happened to a friend once, but let's just say you couldn't understand the price that the clerk was saying, you could say:

代を書いて下さい。
Dai wo kaite kudasai.
Please write down the price.

This is for if you're looking for something specific:

_____ はどこですか。
_____　wa doko desu ka?
Where is the/a _____?

____ は持っていますか。
____ wa motteimasu ka?
Do you have the/a ____?
