I'm pretty sure PS3 will be using a laser lense and if it is, it raises concern....as you know, many PS2s including mine would scratch up games, not read games, and would basically make us Sony gamers suffer. Some games would work, where some wouldn't....so I'm wondering...has Sony made a more efficient Laser Lens or what?
Are you sure the problem is persistent only in certain malfunctioning consoles? The warranty of the console should state that there are defective systems will be reimbursed.
I have my PlayStation 2 for almost 4 years now and no sign of a laser lense damaging disc have been seen.
Also, if the problem have occurred in previous generation of systems, I am sure that Sony will listen to consumers' reports and create more efficient lenses.

Yea, I've had mine since it came out, but this was a wide spread problem for many people. So many people complained about it, and there are so many websites offering to fix it, or instructions to open it so you can fix it. You could also send it Sony for them to fix it. You could use a laser lens cleaner, but I heard those also scratch away at the lens.
yea its a dual blu-ray dvd lens, just two different lasers going through the lens.... at different times, it was only on certain model of the ps2 that the lasers died on, i have a first model japanese ps2 and the laser is still going strong
for those who have problam with the len that can play Some games , where some wouldn't. is because of the mobchip inside. for the new version game some time because of the old version mobchip. and some time is because of the len is wear. just change the len and all will be o.k
