Phan Gaw Li (The Marble)
Myanmar/Burmese Movie Review
written by: PurdeeGem

FORWORD
This is the first time I've written a review for a movie/drama, so I give out apologies in advance. On the good side however, I've included youtube links to view this movie (yes, with English subtitles).

RATINGS
Rating (general): seventy percentile (you'll have to rate for yourself) ;]
Rating (acting): ninety percentile

LEAD CAST
Male: Min Maw Kun
Female: Eindra Kyaw Zin

SYNOPSIS
Mile (Min Maw Kun) and his friends are playing a game of marbles. It may sound a bit childish, but it is actually rather fun, challenging and at times, it is for the sake of winning a bet. Mile's goofy friends are betting on drinks. If Mile can't hit the can with the marble, while it is thrown into the sky by one of his friends, he will lose and the drinks will be on him. Unfortunately for Mile, the marble strikes the leg of a beautiful passerby, A Kyin Nar (Eindra Kyaw Zin). She is upset and does not believe that Mile unintentionally hit her with a marble.

Ever since Mile met her, he started to follow her around. It must have been love at first sight! In the beginning, he waited for her, hiding behind bushes and the likes. He'd throw or roll marbles near her to agitate her. As time passed on, he no longer hid, but continued to wait for her, in order to flirt with her, with the help of his marbles. Although Mile's friends are good friends of A Kyin Nar's friends, they were useless in making A Kyin Nar like Mile. She disliked Mile ever since Mile hit her with the marble.

To make matters worse, Mile and A Kyin Nar come from different worlds. In terms of social class/rank, A Kyin Nar comes from a rich family. Mile, on the other hand is not poor, but is considered middle class (lower middle class, if you will). Things turn around when A Kyin Nar sees Mile for who he is. However, this did not lead to happiness, for many conflicts arose.

OPINIONS ON THE STORYLINE
The storyline is decent. Some scenes were overly repetitive, which may frustrate viewers.

LENGTH
The length of the movie is just right. However, let me warn you that there will be many scenes within the movie that just drag on and on. You might want to "fast forward" through such scenes if you are an impatient person. ;]

ACTING
The leads were flawless in acting. You'll appreciate their acting in addition to Eindra Kyaw Zin's beautiful face.

POSITIVE POINTS
It's not an East Asian movie and neither is it an American movie, so please do not expect such a quality. In comparison to East Asian/American films, special effects featured in Phan Gaw Li may appear to be "old school". The quality of Myanmar films has improved drastically, so please be content with what you see. Myanmar songs are featured throughout the film. One non-Myanmar song is also featured. The highlite of this movie was the usage of the marble (thus the title of the movie).

CONCLUSION
I recommend this movie because it features a unique love story. While it's true that much of the storyline is "typical" of Myanmar films, it's still a nice movie to watch. It even reminds female viewers to not fall in love with a guy who doesn't remember your birthday (you'll have to watch the movie to get what I mean)!
Plus, what's there to lose in watching Phan Gaw Li (The Marble)? Rarely will you ever have the opportunity to watch a Southeast Asian film with English subtitles... (fyi: The subtitles were added on by "4evergreen" of youtube.com)
