Foreword: This review will attempt to be as detailed as possible without plot disclosure. Be forewarned, minor spoilers may be noted.
Certain speculations leave many fans to believe that this film is based on a true story. To my knowledgable extent, it actually is. But, keeping in mind that the filming industry often try to 'spice' up the plot for entertainment purposes.
Synopsis
Gyeon-woo (Cha Tae-Hyun), a Korean college student, is a rather guillible and senseless character. It was another normal night returning to home when he encounter a strange girl (Jeon Ji-Hyun) upon the underground metro. She seems to be irregular but nevertheless still cute to his liking. As they rode upon the underground metro, the girl sudden fell unconscious. Upon her awakening, she suspceted that Gyeon-woo might have done some degenerating things to her.
Ackwardly, this led to their friendship with one another. As their friendship progresses, Gyeon-woo realize that there is a mysterious sadness within the girl's life. Being caring as he is, he wishes to convey to her and be supportive. In return, the girl's attitude toward the naive Gyeon-woo is rather aggressive and assertive. Gyeon-woo, in turns, follows the girl's demands and conduct to what she wishes. Their hostile relationship will led to sorrows. How will Gyeon-woo disentangle this complexity?
Reivew
This movie can be described in a few words: good-humored, clever and heart-warming. Now, how can a comedic film be sentimental at the same time? That question will be answered upon viewing 'My Sassy Girl'. You will laugh at the top of your lungs but then might cry in the bottom of your heart.
The film makers ingeniously led us through the perspective of a bizarre couple. Upon their unexpected meeting, you will think to yourself "this will be seemingly entertaining to watch". Consequently, it turns out to be just so. Cha Tae-Hyun is most fitting to play Gyeon-woo. He is not the most handsome and his looks seems to portray a sense of carelessness and nitwitted; in otherwords, he is a dork. However, the girl, played by the seemingly beautiful Jeon Ji-Hyun, does not portray much characteristics of her aggressive personality. With these two combined will led to unexpected entertainment.
As foreknowledge, this story is affectionate as well. As you learn more about both characters, you develope an fondness for them both. The film is carefully made so that you know their perspective and understand their sentiments. In addition, the melodic classical pieces that is added to the film supports the theme and tone. When we see Gyeon-woo being bullied by the girl, the fun and carefree piano solos will brightens up the mood. Thus, in more emotional scenes, the music will really tie together with the acting. On a side note, one of my most favorite composition is played in the theme. The song "Canon" (in D Major) by Pachelbel Johann is played at the right moment weaving and depicting of what is to come ahead.
This film is highly recommended. It still sits high among the shelves of success after numerous years.
