Who thinks that the Korean language is choppier than most? It's obviously not a romance language. It doesn't sound as good as mandarin or Japanese IMO.

What about you guys?

I live in the New-Asian-Town district of San Francisco and walk Clement Street daily. I hear mostly Cantonese and Mandarin, but some Korean and Vietnamese ... as well as some Russian and some unidentified. lol

To me, Cantonese is a very lyrical language, almost musical. I love the sound of it. Mandarin is the language that sounds choppy, almost militaristic to my ears, but there are a thousand different dialects to Mandarin. I can't understand what is being said but I can usually tell the difference between Taiwanese, Shanghainese, and other 'mainland' chinese. And as I mentioned, Cantonese just sings above the rest of them. I love it.

Shanghainese has a lot of 'shh' sounds, it seems to me. Taiwanese is the most pleasant sounding Mandarin dialect to me.

My GF is from Xiamen, born and raised, and speaks with a mostly Taiwanese dialect. (Culturally, she also identifies with Taiwanese more than mainland China.) Two things absolutely freak me out: (1) She has a mildly difficult time understanding a lot of Mandarin speakers (not to mention Cantonese); (2) and this is really freaky to me, there is just one written chinese language (well, Traditional and Simplified, but ...), and this one written language is spoken in two (or more) completely not understood by the other languages.

I don't think Korean sounds choppy at all. As a matter of fact, I think it sounds almost French. It's a very sexy sounding language to me. So I guess, to each his own. I'm sure it also depends on who-what-where-how-when you hear the languages. Hearing them live and in person is different than hearing them only on the tele or in movies.

Imagine if you were Korean and were addicted to watching Jerry Springer; you'd have a rather warped view of what American English sounds like. There's Valley Girl, New York, Texas Draawwl, and Fargo North Dakota. Zut alors!

Interesting topic.

RE: Korean language is choppy

I think korean actually sounds the best to me... even though it seems choppy they are they are choppy with more 's' and 'sh' and 'g' (I think) but mandarin has more 'ch' 'b' and 'sh'. Hehe, I'm just basing this off of what I've heard... =P

RE: Korean language is choppy

every language will sound like they are going to chop each other into pieces, but that depend on the situation they are in discussion what ever the topic is about.

So I would conclude all language are equally beautiful.
