Jimmy Lin was featured on the September 2008 Star OK Magazine. Here was the interview with Jimmy Lin:
Jimmy: Love The Excitement of Speed
He drove a Porsche at 18 and was famous throughout Asia at 20. He drove a Ferrari at 23 and owned his own racing team at 31. This is Jimmy Lin growing up in the public eyes in the last 17 years. He is now a mature man, the leading male of this year's highest rated tv series My Lucky Star. There are no wrinkles on his face. In his own words, he loves racing and has the speed to race against time so he won't grow old.
What does it feel like to be the leading male of an idol series?
I think it's interesting. I worked with actors from other countries before but this time it's really different working with Yoo HaNa. She has many facial expressions in one sentence. When I worked with her I was attracted by them. After she said a bunch of words I forgot my lines. I was totally attracted by her exaggerated expressions.
You have a concert in October. What do you want to express yourself?
I hope that this concert is a perfect ending for my fans of 17 yrs and also a new beginning. Most fans can guess what music I will use on stage: from my love of racing, Rainy Days of 17, Wild Chrysanthemum. I think that my fans can sing along with me. What I want is that this is not my concert but a carnival for everyone. We've been thru 17 yrs and grew up together. There are lots of memories.
What do you think hasn't changed in these 17 yrs
People around me said that I haven't changed but I think I have changed a lot. If you compare the 17 yr old of me to me today, for example, when I sing Not Every Love Song Has a Fond Memory I will sing it differently. My feelings are different. I think what hasn't changed is my outlook on life. I always give every job my best. I have a fresh outlook on everything and keep myself happy.
How do you stay fresh? You have done interviews like this many times.
I think I try to look at it from the other person's standpoint. I can feel like this because of racing. You know the speed in racing is very fast. The more agitated you are the easier it is to make mistakes. As you said before, I have done many interviews, but I believe that there are still people out there who have not read it before and don't know what I think. May be they have heard it before and want to hear it again.
Do you still listen to your old songs?'
Yes, I will watch the old MVs too. I was a student then and knew nothing. I had a lot of energy and would jump at anything. Now I have more feelings when I sang the old songs.
Is the news that you will get marry soon true?
I have to thank everyone's concern. No, it's not true. I never thought that so many people were concerned about my marital status. When the news first broke, it became front page entertainment news on all the major websites and newspapers. I was in Mongolia the other day. When I got off the plane I received more than 60 congratulating text messages. I though it was funny. I have no idea where this news came out of. Internet news is quite disturbing. It can launch one's career overnight and can also destroy it. I hope you won't believe everything you read on the internet. Lastly, I want to say that if there is good news I will let everyone know.
What do you think the ideal family life is?
I want to spend more time with my family, especially after I have kids. I don't want to miss them growing up because of my work. Like my good friend Richie Ren, he can't be with his daughter all the time. When she started learning to talk she could only say mama and not papa. Richie can't enjoy his daughter's happy time of growing up. Like myself, I entered showbiz when I was young and didn't have much time to spend with my family.
What do you think is a perfect day in family life?
Get up with my family, fix breakfast together. If I cook myself they will go hungry. I can only fry ham and egg. If I have kids I want to play ball with them or take them on trips and take many beautiful pics.
Have you done these before?
No, I have many other things to do, like racing, TV series, concert, and other careers.
I heard that you are a very successful businessman with a net worth of over 100M. Everyone calls you CEO Lin.
I have some companies but I am not as wealthy as you said, not the type with chauffeurs and bodyguards. I drive myself to work.
I heard that you spend a lot of money on cars. What cars do you have?
I have a Ferrari. I drive a Benz daily. I like cars with speed.
Is showbiz just a hobby?
No, it's not just a hobby. I treat it like a career for the fans who love me. It's something I have to work hard on.
Have you ever thought of quitting showbiz?
No, I think everyone needs me. I have met reporters who said that they grew up listening to my songs. I think that's interesting. I think everyone is growing and I work hard on changing too. I will continue to star in idol series. Lots of people say that I have a baby face. I don't feel bad about it.
But I have a feeling that you like racing more and will talk about racing unconsciously
I indeed love racing. I keep accelerating when I race. It feels like I am catching the lost time. It gives me a totally different feeling. When I was younger I tried too hard to push forward my career and my racing. Then I had an accident during a race and hit the barrier at 150kph. I broke 3 bones in my foot and couldn't work in months. But after that accident I learned more about racing. As a racer I shouldn't have put all the focus on other racers. Don't try to catch up with others. I should put all the focus on myself and try to surpass my own records. It's the same in other works. If you concentrate on your own work you will get back more. Getting restless is futile.
