RE: Japanese Horror Movies
I really like American movies, but the Japanese originals of the Ring, Grudge, &c, are far more chilling. Anyone know why?

I enjoy the adrenaline rush..

Why is that? Is it that the Japanese culture recognised invisible spirits until comparatively recently, and the sense of them is lurking in their minds...?

Maybe the Christian background to American culture convinces people that good will triumph over evil and therefore that the movie will have a happy ending - which is satisfying, but not so terrifying!

RE: Japanese Horror Movies
Asian horror movies are so much better than Hollywood's slasher fests. I would recommend Takashi Miike's Audition as an introduction to Asian horror movies. IMO his best work to date; very much like a Hitchcock film. It draws you in slowly and then hits you over the head unexpectedly like Hitchcock's Psycho. For those with more extreme tastes the Guinea Pig series or the Red Room might be to your liking. Warning, you need a strong stomach to watch the extreme stuff.

RE: Japanese Horror Movies
I personally didn't like Ju-on that much, I got kind of bored.
Ringu on the other hand gave me nightmares for a long time. It's so terribly sad in a way and so freakishly scary at the same time. Haven't dared to watch the sequels though, afraid they'd ruin it for me.

Anyone seen a movie called something like Noroi - The Curse? I saw it on youtube. Filmed in a Blairwitch-kinda way, really strange and really really scary.
