Jackie Chan: "China needs to be controlled"

Jackie Chan recent comment in regards on whether China people "need to be controlled" have causes an rebuke amongst it fellow people in Hong Kong and Taiwan.

He believes that China being a free country may not be beneficial for its citizens.

I'm not sure if it's good to have freedom or not," Chan said Saturday. "I'm gradually beginning to feel that we Chinese need to be controlled. If we're not being controlled, we'll just do what we want."

Chan's comment drew applauses amongst predominantly Chinese audience of business leaders, but it didn't sit well with lawmakers of Hong Kong and Taiwan.

"He's insulted the Chinese people. Chinese people aren't pets," Hong Kong pro-democracy legislator Leung Kwok-hung told The Associated Press. "Chinese society needs a democratic system to protect human rights and rule of law."

Chan's comment made many Chinese people think he is being an "racist".

RE: Jackie Chan's China comment causes controversies
I don't know who I should agree with... I think Jackie's right to a certain degree... We do need a little more control... That's how it was throughout China's history up until around the early 1900s or so (I'm not really sure on the exact details) but, without that control, it wouldn't have made the culture China has today. I know 'times have changed' and I respect what Leung said but I personally think that there should be a balance between: being controlled and being free to do what we want because if we were free to do what we wanted, there would be no drive - no motivation. I also think what Leung said about Chinese people not being pets is quite true, but I don't think that we should be left to be influenced by every new thing that passes our eyes.

Eh, overall... somewhere between the two would be nice Smile

i agree. chinese people should be controlled to a certain extent because chinese are naturally a bit greedy and selfish in a way. if you look throughout history, alot of kings and dynasty fell becasue of greed and selfish
