RE: HELP! want to learn cantonese
Hey ivory, I have noticed you need help on the Cantonese language. Lucky enough, I am able to help you on that issue.

Let me know what you like to learn or want to say? List it all out if you like because I'm pretty sure there will be more than one saying you would want to learn.
Note: The way I'll try to pronounce it out in English for you to learn; you might not comprehend so I apologize if it does happen. Other than that, I'll do my best to help you.

Feel free to PM me or just reply back here. Have fun during your stay in Hong Kong! ^^

RE: HELP! want to learn cantonese
Thank you lilxjoanna for your willingness to help me. I really appreciate it.

I actually have some basic cantonese words that I am trying to learn even now. My problem is I don't have any opportunity to use it often since none of my family speaks cantonese and I don't have any cantonese speaking friend either to practice with. I'm trying to look for a cantonese movie or song with an English translation in order for me to let my ears get used and be familiar to the language and how it is pronounce but haven't found one yet.

What can you suggest I do? I hope all these wouldn't be too much for you.

Thanks!Big Grin

Your welcome, ivory
I was chosen to be the new language moderator so it is my job to help the people in needs. Let me just say, whether it Cantonese or Mandarin; the language is HARD to learn. The reason to that is because their isn't no alphabet in the language. There are million of words that means different things. Also, the way you speak is also different because of the pronunciation. In order to fully learn, you must be adapted around the language like: watching a lot of Cantonese movies, take Chinese classes, or have friends that speaks the Chinese language. Those are the best options I can give you.

Don't be afraid to speak the language even if you say the word wrong. No one will penalize you for that. For a beginner, you want to speak the language as much as possible. That goes for all languages also.

For your request, there are places you can get Chinese movies w/ English subtitle around Hong Kong. Go to one of those Asian movies store and ask the clerk what you looking for. In example: Once upon a time in China with Jet Li in it. Or you can always say you're a foreigner visiting Hong Kong that wants to buy Chinese movies with English subtitles. They should lead you to the right sections.

If not, download them from the internet. There plenty of forums that has Chinese movies with English translation.
Such as AmpedAsia (Here), D-addict, PopularAsian, Youtube, Veoh, Crunchyroll and many more...

Note: If their a specific movie/series you want to see. I'll be glad to help you find it.

Best of luck to you! ^^
