Great Teacher Onizuka
Great Teacher Onizuka (Drama)
By: XeroXtancy
Foreword: This review will attempt to be as detailed as possible without plot disclosure. Be forewarned, minor spoilers may be noted.
Great Teacher Onizuka (commonly referred to as GTO), is a manga, anime and Japanese drama created by Tohru Fujisawa. The drama is deeply originated from the manga and anime with some minor plot differentiation.
Synopsis
Our main character, Onizuka Eikichi (played by Sorimachi Takashi), is a 26 years-old ex-Bousou Tenshi (Running Wild Angels) biker gang legendary member. After his education trainning completion in a third-rate university, Onizuka sets out on a quest to become the greatest high school teacher of Japan. However, due to his lacking of manners, atrocious & perverted attitude and his old records of crime, this task shall be rather challenging.
After nailing his first teaching job, Onizuka is overwhelmed with joy. But, upon just the first day, he realizes the troubles that faces him. Onizuka was assigned to a homeroom classroom with a rather unfavorable group of troublemakers. The class is well-known for their beleaguering of teachers in the past and Onizuka is no different story for them. It is truly a test to see if Onizuka can win the hearts of these juveniles with his teaching talents. Will he become the 'Great Teacher Onizuka'?
Review
Upon hearing great critiques about the drama from my peers, I just had to inspect what all hype was about. At first thought, the drama seems to have a very simple and wearisome plot. To my surprise, just because a drama have an incomplex plot, does not determine its potential values. Great Teacher Onizuka is just that.
We have an incongruous character; seemingly have no abilities to teach, trying to acquire success in the field. Onizuka Eikichi is a perverted and ill-mannered guy trying to make something of his life. A fitting role for the comedic Japanese actor Sorimachi Takashi. Sorimachi carried out the part at ease and successfully. Onizuka will make you laugh at one time due to his witty solutions to dodge problems and complexities.
The main plot of the drama was basically revolving around Onizuka's goals to win the heart of his students along with some other troubles he faces along the way. Incomplexed, as previously stated, but you will find this simple plot to be worth of great appraisal. With only 12 episodes and 1 special, the plot is straight foward. Seeing the way Onizuka abides around his troubles and gain the trust and love of his students will leave you with not only a good laugh, but a warm-hearted sensation as well.
