Gigi Lai Chi (Simplified Chinese: 黎姿, born on 1 October 1971) is a Hong Kong actress under contract to the TVBtelevision channel.

She is the grand-daughter of Mr. Lai Man-Wai (黎文偉, who is a key figure of the first generation filmmakers, and have been referred as "Father of Hong Kong Movie". With this kind of background, you would expect Gigi to have grown up in luxury. However, the reality is the complete opposite and she grew up under very poor circumstances.

Gigi is very well known for her beautiful image and her love of beauty, the Hong Kong media has dubbed her the nickname “Goddess of Beauty.” (爱美神. In the past, Gigi would turn down roles if they affected her appearance onscreen. But now Gigi has changed, placing greater emphasis on acting opportunities rather than the need to appear beautiful onscreen.

When Gigi was only 14 years old, she entered the entertainment industry and earned money to support the whole family. She first started out as a singer, she released many albums during the 90's, in both Cantonese and Mandarin. Gigi has made several box office hits, especially for her role as the innocent and stuttering “Smartie” in the popular "Young and Dangerous" movies.

She won the TVB Most Popular Actress Award in 2004 for her portrayal of a scheming and conniving concubine in the hit series "War and Beauty". Gigi has since become very popular with fans from Hong Kong and mainland China and many overseas countries.

Gigi Lai wins 2006 Moves China Award - Artiste of the Year

The Chinese media has revealed the results for 2006 Moves China Award and Gigi Lai has been chosen as the artiste to receive this award for 2006.

The Moves China Award chooses one artiste who has moved the hearts of the people of China during the year, and Gigi has been chosen as the artiste of 2006.

The certificate says " Everyday, there are people and things that move us, they encourage us, and let us believe there is beauty in the world and kindness in people's hearts. The 2006 Artiste of the year is Gigi Lai."

Gigi Wins the Hearts of Shanghai's Crowd

TVB Series "Beneath the Charm" will be the New Year Series for China's largest satellite TV channel Dragon TV and air to the whole country. The show's stars Moses Chan, Gigi Lai and Mandy Cho flew out to Shanghai earlier to take part in the promotional activities.

When the artistes appeared at the press conference, the fans who were waiting screamed out for them and many dedicated fans had travelled from Beijing especially to see them in a moving and overwhelming scene. Although Gigi was not wearing her costume, she still oozed the charm from her series and her beauty captivated the support from the fans. When the press asked her if she was worried that playing some argumentative or negative roles would affect her image, she said: "I am not afraid of hurting my image. I am an actor and this means I should try many different roles. When I get into character, then I only think one way and I will do my best to create a well-rounded role."

For Moses who always looks out for his fans, he even spoke to a fan on the phone who couldn't make it to wish her a happy birthday. Moses and Gigi were full of praises for each other's talents. Having already worked with Moses in seven series so far, Gigi indicates that they will be co-operating again for this year's 80-episode series "Jewels Spendour" in their 8th collaboration.

"Jewel's Splendor" Costume Fitting; Actresses Wear $48 Million in Jewels



TVB's new 80 episode series, "Jewel's Splendor" 《珠光寶氣》 held its costume fitting yesterday. The series is produced by Chik Kei Yi and features the cast from "Dance of Passion" and centers around the story of 3 sisters in the diamond industry. The series will film in Qingdao, Shanghai, Beijing, Thailand, Britain, and South Africa.

The actresses wore $48.81 million (HKD) in jewels, totalling 423.5 carats. The three lead actresses Gigi Lai, Ada Choi, and Maggie Shiu play 3 sisters in the series. Their diamonds alone were worth $35.7 million (HKD). There was heightened security at the studio due to the invaluable jewelry.

Gigi was the most favored and sponsored with $13 million (HKD) in jewelry and wore a red Valentino evening dress. Ada and Maggie's black evening gowns were provided by TVB, thus making Gigi the spotlight at the event.



Gigi's Valentino dress was sponsored through TVB's arrangement and there is only one dress available in Hong Kong. Noticing the low sexy cut, she was surprised and the little fabric [for the frontal design] is pushing the limits.

Reporters commented that her image seems to stand out from the other actresses. Gigi commented that everyone looks beautiful as well. She is happy that "Jewel's Splendor has a lot of sponsors and purses valued over $10k will also be provided, thus Gigi does not have to pull out her personal collection for the filming. Would Gigi's role in "Jewel's Splendor" pave the way for her to compete in the Best Actress Award? Gigi said the most important thing is to enjoy the filming process.

Ada Choi was sponsored with $11.2 million (HKD) in jewelry. The most outstanding was a 9 carat diamond ring valued at $6 million (HKD). Ada also wore 5 carats in diamond earrings. Reporters asked why she was not sponsored with an evening gown? Ada said the dress was arranged by TVB and was quite beautiful. The press conference's main focus was to showcase the splendor of the jewelry.

In the series, Ada is a queen at ball events and enjoys flaunting herself. Her character will be first married to Cheung Chi Kwong and then Ngok Wah. Wong He will also have a crush on her.

Is Ada's real-life target to marry a rich man? Ada's believes that love should be based on honesty and even rich people have true love relationships. The most important criteria is that the man has family values and has goals in life. In "Jewel's Splendor," Ada believes her older-man, younger woman relationship with Ngok Wah is believable. Love is not bounded by age nor class.

Maggie Shiu wore $11.5 million (HKD) in jewelry. Filming with such invaluable jewelry produces a certain level of anxiety, but TVB will provide added security measures. In the series, Maggie's character needs to look beautiful and cool at the same time. Executive manager, Catherine Tsang has advised that Maggie needs to increase her beauty skin regimen.



Earlier there were rumors that Bowie Lam and Wong He did not get along with each other. Both actors are once again collaborating on "Jewel's Splendor" and greeted each other at the costume fitting yesterday. During the meeting, they helped each other get copies of the script.

After the press conference, Wong He left immediately, causing Bowie to regret that they can not demonstrate through action that there is no rife between the two actors.

Reporters found Wong He in the make-up studio afterwards. Reporters asked whether Wong He feels awkward running into Bowie again? "No, we greeted each other during the meeting. Later, we will be going to China to film scenes for a sailboat competition."

Reporters confronted Moses Chan regarding the "fixed" results of girlfriend Bernice Liu winning the Newcomer Award at Jade Solid Gold Awards. Famous Hong Kong clothing brand MOISELLE held its spring and summer fashion show yesterday. MOISELLE's spokesperson Gigi Lai led many models on the catwalk to display the brand's spring and summer collection. Many artists from the entertainment industry such as Kathy Chow came to watch the fashion show, there appeared to be stars both on and off the stage.


Compared to the red hot fiery dress Gigi wore at "Jewel’s Splendor" costume fitting, she wasn’t as sexy this time. Gigi replied that none of the dresses were personally picked out by her, they were all sent to TVB before the start of the events. The sexy red dress is the only one available in Hong Kong, and it was extra small size. Can her "Love Beauty Goddess" assets really fit into an extra small size dress? Gigi smiled and replied “I really am extra small size, and I need to wear high heels so the dress doesn’t drag on the floor.”


Gigi is very glad to be the spokesperson for MOISELLE, however, she admitted that she does feel some pressure working with all the western models because they are all 6 feet tall, she felt very small next to them. As for MOISELLE kicking out Ada Choi and keeping Gigi as the only spokesperson, she replied that she has developed a good relationship with the company over the past 3 years and was unsure about why Ada was missing.

Unhappy Gigi Lai is favored, Ada Choi throws a fit

It was previously rumoured that Gigi Lai was TVB golden producer Chik Kei Yi’s favourite actress. This made Ada Choi unhappy and grumpy, reporters saw her throwing fits onset and scaring everyone around her.

Ever since Jewel Splendor started filming, there had been so much controversy surrounding the three fa dans Ada, Gigi and Maggie Shiu. Amongst the three of them, it was clear producer Chik Kei Yi favored Gigi the most. Scared of losing her position, Ada decided to put up a fight for the female lead spot.

Reporters noticed that Ada always acted as though she was the big sister, shouting at everyone who came near her, the most unlucky person was her assistant who got yelled at constantly. To avoid getting yelled at, the crew had to treat Ada like she was the queen, putting on her makeup and necklaces, and even changing her shoes for her.
