Forming questions

[ Forming a Question ]

There are many ways to form a question in Korean. It depends on what style of speech you are using and how formal or informal you want to be.

The polite formal style would use 까

So for an example, here is a polite formal sentence.

란스 입니다. (I am Lance)

If you were to ask, are you lance?

란스 입니까?

As you can see, we simply replaced the 다 with 까.

You can tell if a sentence is in the polite formal style if you see the sentence ends with ㅂ니다.

Now we will go to the polite but INFORMAL style of speech. This is probably what you will more commonly hear.

란스 이에요. (I am Lance)

To make this statement into a question, all you have to do is raise the intonation of your voice very much like how you would do in other languages.

To recognize that a sentence is in the polite informal style, you will notice the polite ending marker 요. This is a very good indicator that the sentence is polite informal.

[ Question Words ]

Who - nu gu - 누구

What - moh - 뭐

"What" can also be 무슨 or 무엇

Where - au di - 어디

How - o te kei - 어떻게

When - unjchae - 언제

Which - 어느
