i think it was because I'm in Canada and our school board has made it set for all grade eights to read this book. I guess its different there in the USA. I think in the USA, you get to read tom sawyer?

I'm from Canada too, we never really had to read the giver, the other class did, but we never did, I think it's as long as you do some sort of novel study.
I know in like highschool you have to read books in Canada. Books or plays. We read "The Taming of the Shrew" in Grade nine. And for grade 10 you have to read "Romeo and Juliet" and "Lord of the Flies"
