RE: Dragon Tiger Gate (New Movie)
I just picked up this DVD today on the Bowery (NYC). It was $15.50, about the same price as it is online, but without the wait or shipping charges.
First impressions: the first 10 minutes almost made me not finish it. The introductory fight scene, where we first see Tiger in action in the restaurant, was way too MTVish. Very fast scene changes, strange camera angles, distracting light effects. I like my fight scenes pretty straight on, focusing on the actual fight and not how many cute, edgy, unusual camera angles and special scene transitions the film editor can fit into the movie. I did continue to watch though, and this fight scene was fortunately more the exception than the rule in the film. The story and the characters could have been fleshed out a little more. I didn't read the comic books that the movie is based on so I guess I wasn't up on the story. After I got into it though it was really quite entertaining. It is definitely great for anyone with a large size, wide screen TV. Most of the film is in letterbox format, although for no reason it did change to full screen a few times (especially in the scenes around the Gate school with the kids in the scenes). I haven't watched any of the Bonus Features Disk yet, but just based on the movie Disk it's a definite "Buy" recomendation. Enough action and mostly beautiful camera work (with the notable exception mentioned above).
