RE: Cantonese to Mandarin
Hi!
Nice you wanna learn Mandarin... Like some1 said here in this post, its easier to learn if you already know canto. But harder the other way. Cantonese has 6-8 tones in their language and mandarin only use 4.
And some1 said you should look at youtube or something to see some shows in Mandarin...
I have a better suggestion... hope it will get u to learn faster..
Online TV.... goggle this " ttlive " or just " Tvkoo ". These 2 are a software to see tv shows from asia... I think they broadcast from Taiwan. Lots of Mandarin 4 u here ... Good luck

RE: Cantonese to Mandarin

Wow, you're so cool! I speak both cantonese and mandarin, but that's because my mother is from Guangzhou. Determination will be my best suggestion! Also watching mandarin TV will help you! Mandarin is, in my opinion, easier, than cantonese. it's easy to find good books, that teaches you mandarin, but my Korean friend uses the Routhledge series, or Rosetta Stone. He also watches Chinese television, like Mare TV. He learnt so much, and I believe you will do too!
God luck, +you!

RE: Cantonese to Mandarin
I think cantonese to manderin is much easier from manderin to cantonese. I'm cantonese and I could pronounce manderin with a decent accent. But when I teach a manderin person cantonese, it take more time to sound perfect, maybe because manderin people have the "curl tongue" and canton's don't. It would be even harder learning vietnamese.

RE: Cantonese to Mandarin
I'm pretty sure if you learn the basic pinyin you can eventually get use to the sounds and translate it into Cantonese. I speak Cantonese but my boss speaks mandarin to me. I can understand what he says to me but not really enough to carry a long conversation.

RE: Cantonese to Mandarin
My mother can speak tio ciu... but I can only speak hokkian (fu jian / Min nan) . and I'm born and raised in Indonesia! well, I came from Medan, where hokkien almost the mother languange is
anyway, I can speak and read mandarin , not very good, but I can like interact with chinese people pretty well
is it very hard to learn cantonese? I'm really interested to learn the languange..
